Rays' Adeiny Hechavarria: Activation expected soon
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Hechavarria (oblique) will join the Rays during their current series with Pittsburgh and will likely be activated shortly, Steve Carney of Sports Radio 620 WDAE reports Monday.

The Rays are in Pittsburgh through Thursday, so expect Hechavarria to be activated any day now. His value comes primarily from his glove, and he isn't even a significant enough source of stolen bases to make his skillset worthwhile in a fantasy context.

Rays' Diego Moreno: Shifted to 60-day DL
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Moreno (shoulder) was moved to the 60-day DL on Monday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Moreno still hasn't resumed throwing after suffering a setback in his recovery last week, so the Rays decided to shift him to the 60-day DL in order to free up a spot on the 40-man roster for recently acquired Adeiny Hechavarria (oblique). He'll now be eligible to return anytime after July 24, though it's still unclear if he'll be ready by then.

Rays' Adeiny Hechavarria: Acquired from Marlins for prospects
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Hechavarria (oblique) was traded Monday to the Rays in exchange for minor-league players Braxton Lee and Ethan Clark, Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald reports.

With the Marlins well off the pace of the division-leading Nationals in the NL East, the team will kick off its midseason fire sale by first moving Hechavarria, who has served as the team's primary shortstop the past four-plus seasons. Hechavarria offers a dependable glove up the middle, but with a career 70 wRC+, he sports a below-average bat for his position. Hechavarria should still be in store for regular at-bats with his new team while the Rays make room for him by moving Tim Beckham over to the keystone, but Hechavarria could be pushed to the bench once the team gets Brad Miller (groin) and/or Matt Duffy (heel) back from the disabled list, likely at some point after the All-Star break. Hechavarria has been on the DL with an oblique injury of his own since early May, but he recently concluded a rehab assignment and should be activated in time for the Rays' series opener with the Pirates on Tuesday.

Rays' Chase Whitley: Blows save opportunity Sunday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Whitley was charged with his first blown save in Sunday's 8-5 loss to the Orioles, allowing an earned run on a solo home run over an inning. He also recorded a strikeout.

The right-handed reliever was taken deep for a game-tying solo shot by Jonathan Schoop in the eighth, erasing the slim 5-4 lead Whitley had been asked to preserve. The 28-year-old has shown some vulnerability lately, giving up seven earned runs across his last eight appearances. However, he maintains a solid 3.00 ERA, while his 0.94 WHIP is certainly keeping fantasy owners pleased.

Rays' Tommy Hunter: Impressive outing in Sunday's loss
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Hunter was credited with his fifth hold in Sunday's 8-5 loss to the Orioles, firing a scoreless 1.2 innings and recording two strikeouts.

The veteran reliever was a bright spot in otherwise rough afternoon for the Rays bullpen, ringing up his fourth hold in his last eight appearances. Hunter has provided scoreless efforts in six of those outings overall, and he continues to serve as one of the steadiest options in a relief corps that has been erratic on occasion this season.
