Rangers' Jake Diekman: Will undergo stomach surgery, miss half of season
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Diekman (stomach) will undergo surgery to help alleviate ulcerative colitis Jan. 25 and will miss at least half of the season, Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.

This is unfortunate news for both Diekman and the Rangers, as the 29-year-old enjoyed a solid year in 2016, recording a 3.40 ERA while striking out 59 batters across 53 innings. He was also Texas' top southpaw setup man, and the Rangers will likely turn to Alex Claudio to fill the left-handed void in the bullpen until Diekman is available to return.

Rangers' Dillon Gee: Signs minor league contract with Rangers
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Gee (shoulder) agreed to a minor league contract with the Rangers on Tuesday.

Gee is still recovering from thoracic outlook syndrome surgery, which shut him down for the season in September last year. The injury is nothing to overlook, as it has proven to be a career-ender in the past. Even before his injury, the righty struggled in his 33 appearances with Kansas City last year, logging a 4.68 ERA over 125 innings. If he is able to return to full health, the 30-year-old will offer rotation depth, likely starting the year in Triple-A.

Rangers' Josh Hamilton: Signs minor league deal with Rangers
by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com

Hamilton agreed to minor league deal with the Rangers on Tuesday, Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports.

It's difficult to expect much from the 35-year-old given his struggles over the past few years. The lefty didn't play a major league game last year and hasn't played 100-plus games in a season since 2013 due to health issues. Even in 2013, his numbers weren't near the All-Star level he produced in Texas previously. He will attempt to transition to first base in an effort to make the Opening Day roster. Hamilton can request his release if he doesn't make the big league roster out of camp.

Rangers' Jake Diekman: Avoids arbitration with Rangers
by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com

Diekman and the Rangers avoided arbitration with a one-year, $2.55 million deal, Jon Heyman of Today's Knuckleball reports.

Diekman enjoyed a strong year in 2016, recording a 3.40 ERA and 59 strikeouts in 53 innings. He even managed to pick up four saves, which might have helped him double his salary. The 29-year-old is on track to be a free agent after the 2018 season.

Rangers' Jeremy Jeffress: Avoids arbitration
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Jeffress and the Rangers avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $2.1 million contract Friday, Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.

Jeffress notched 27 saves for the Brewers before being sent to the Rangers at last year's trade deadline, but he appeared in just 12 games for his new club due to a stint on the restricted list for personal reasons. He was still effective in those outings, however, so the Rangers decided to bring him back for another year. He was used in a setup role with Texas last year and will likely head into this season in the same spot, but he is a proven option if the Rangers need to replace expected closer Sam Dyson for one reason or another.
