Nationals considering keeping Yunel Escobar at third base
by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com

Nationals manager Matt Williams will have a decision to make when his regular third baseman Anthony Rendon comes back from injury. With Rendon on the shelf, Yunel Escobar has shifted to third and Williams is considering leaving him there even after Rendon returns, according to CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman.

The team is unsure yet what will happen when Rendon returns, but one theory has Escobar staying at third and Rendon shifting to second base, according to Heyman.

Escobar is hitting .292 with five RBI in 65 at-bats while slotted at third base.

Nationals' Bryce Harper slugs fifth home run Sunday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Nationals right fielder Bryce Harper went 1 for 4 with a solo home run in his team's 6-2 loss to the Marlins Sunday.

Harper kicked off the scoring with his second-inning home run, but it wasn't enough for the Nationals to avoid a sweep at the hands of their division rivals. The home run was his first of the week but already his fifth of the season. Harper has hit .270/.420/.524 with five home runs, 11 RBI and 17 walks in 63 at-bats.

Nationals' Gio Gonzalez surrenders six runs in loss vs. Marlins
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Nationals pitcher Gio Gonzalez took the loss Sunday, giving up six earned runs on 10 hits and one walk in five-plus innings while racking up eight strikeouts in his team's 6-2 defeat against the Marlins.

Gonzalez (1-2) pitched three scoreless innings but surrendered a bases-loaded triple in the fourth to fall behind for good. He gave up another RBI triple during a two-run fifth inning, and the Marlins added one more run in the sixth after the starter was removed earlier in the inning.

Gonzalez owns a 5.01 ERA and 22:11 K:BB ratio in 23 1/3 innings. He's scheduled to face the Mets Friday in New York.

Nationals' Max Scherzer 'day to day', may miss Tuesday's start
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer tested his swollen thumb by throwing in the outfield Sunday but did not see any mound work, CSNWashington.com reports.

Scherzer is "day to day" with the thumb injury seems unlikely to make Tuesday's start, CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman reports.

Manager Matt Williams told MLB.com the team would likely make a decision after Monday's game.

"We probably have to make an adjustment. We don't know who that is yet," he said. "We'll get through [Monday's] game and see where we are at. There are options for us. I don't know if Max is going to make this one."

Scherzer did indicate that the thumb felt better Sunday, but it's apparent he won't pitch unless he feels 100 percent. He's just 1-2 over his first four starts but owns a 1.26 ERA and 29:4 K:BB ratio in 28 2/3 innings.

Nationals' Ian Desmond batting sixth Sunday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Nationals shortstop Ian Desmond has been moved down to the No. 6 slot for his team's matchup with the Marlins.

Desmond opened the season as the team's No. 6 batter but had slotted second for 10 straight games heading into Sunday's action. He has hit .333/.378/.500 in 42 at-bats out of the No. 2 spot this season. With the shortstop hitting lower in the order, third baseman Yunel Escobar will see his first action batting second since April 13.

The Nationals are favorites (-118) in Miami Sunday.
