The Astros’ good players are very good. Any team would take Lance Berkman, Carlos Lee, Roy Oswalt and Jose Valverde. Even Miguel Tejada and Pudge Rodriguez, while on the downside of their careers, can still contribute. The problem here is the rest of the roster, and especially the rest of the rotation behind Oswalt. The Astros are counting on Mike Hampton’s health, and that’s never a good plan. If you ask them why they think they’ll be all right, one of the answers is that the Astros are always better than they look on paper. This year, they’d better be.
