Season Preview

Scott Miller's Take

Here's the catch with the Brewers: Yovani Gallardo is on deck to become one of the game's true aces, and Manny Parra is brimming with promise. Will they accomplish what CC Sabathia and Ben Sheets did in 2008? Get real. But these guys are not devoid of hope. Not with Prince Fielder, Ryan Braun, Corey Hart and J.J. Hardy. They need more from Rickie Weeks and they need Bill Hall healthy. The team will feed off of a renewed vigor from Milwaukee fans who, following the team's first playoff appearance in 26 years, are snapping up tickets more quickly than last year. That interest will be fueled or sapped by what happens on the mound. Jeff Suppan disappeared last year. Braden Looper had a slow spring. David Bush seems to have arrived. In the bullpen, closer Trevor Hoffman, 41, battled a strained side muscle. Yikes.

Top Prospects
1. Mat Gamel, 3B
A good hitter at a position of need, but has serious defensive issues.
2. Alcides Escobar, SS
Future All-Star but blocked by J.J. Hardy.
3. Angel Salome, C
Won batting title in minors. Lost time this spring with a back strain but still could make the majors this year.
4. Jeremy Jeffress, RH/SP
Loss of two aces could give strikeout artist chance, but has control issues.
5. Taylor Green, 3B
Patient hitter might stick at third while Gamel moves to another position.

The Brewers are counting on a strong return from Yovani Gallardo, who was limited to four starts last season because of knee surgery. (AP)
