The defending champs seem to have survived one winter scare, because Chase Utley is already back playing and seems fine after hip surgery. The Phillies have shifted their concern to October hero Cole Hamels, who won’t be able to start opening day. The word now is that Hamels won’t have to be pushed too far back, but the Phils won’t be completely comfortable until he’s on the mound and fully healthy. The other Phillies issues are minor ones, from a bench that’s too left-handed to the need to pick a fifth starter. The tougher question, and the one that can’t be answered yet, is whether guys like Brad Lidge, Ryan Howard and Utley can be as good as they were in 2008.
