Danny Knobler's Take

The big spring decision was to send David Price back to the minor leagues. The Rays explained the move by saying they can better limit Price’s innings in Triple-A, and that they want him pitching for them with fewer restrictions in September and maybe October. The problem is that every win should be crucial in the American League East, and after a fairly smooth and very much magic ride in 2008, the Rays figure to see a few bumps in 2009. That doesn’t mean what happened in ’08 was a fluke -- it most definitely wasn’t -- but especially in this division, it’s easy to see this team missing the playoffs this year.

Top Prospects
1. David Price, LH/SP
The Rays' No. 1 pick in 2007 and top prospect will impact the Rays' in '09, but starts of slow in the minors.
2. Reid Brignac, SS
Good power for SS, but a bit raw as a hitter. Could become starter in '09.
3. Wade Davis, RH/SP
Biggest drawback is he isn't Price. Ready, but there's no spot for him.
4. Jeff Niemann, RH/SP
Looked good in spring competition for the fifth spot. Trade candidate if there's no spot for him.
5. Jeremy Hellickson, RH/SP
Doesn't walk batters and has high ceiling, but too many pitchers to hurdle.

Troy Percival, who saved 28 games for the Rays last season, is coming back from an injury-plagued 2008 and back surgery in November. (AP)
