Season Preview

Danny Knobler's Take

Bet you didn’t know that the Blue Jays are one of just seven teams that have had a winning record each of the last three seasons. One reason you didn’t know is that the Jays are the only one of the seven without a playoff appearance in that time. With a rotation that features Roy Halladay and a bunch of question marks, the Jays may be hard-pressed to finish over .500 this year. They’ll be even more hard-pressed to get to the playoffs, because to do so they’ll have to beat out at least two of the three super teams in their division. Manager Cito Gaston says he feels good about the future of the organization, but with the rotation a question and closer B.J. Ryan’s velocity going AWOL this spring, it’s hard for even Gaston to predict a quick return to the glory days.

Top Prospects
1. Travis Snider, OF
Could compete with David Price and Matt Wieters for AL ROY.
2. J.P. Arencibia, C
A mashing catcher just a few months away from from big big-league ready.
3. Brett Cecil , LH/SP
The 2007 first-rounder needs to start the year in Triple-A, has risen quickly through the minors and shouldn't be held back.
4. Brad Mills, LH/SP
Mills has been dominant thus far in his pro career with no setbacks.
5. David Cooper, 1B
This first-round from Cal in 2008 should be able to arrive quickly and might be the starting 1B in spring 2010.

David Purcey, a first-round pick in 2004, pitched in the majors for the first time in 2008 and went 3-6 in 12 starts. (AP)
