--RHP Kelvim Escobar is likely to open the season on the disabled list due to a right shoulder ailment. He has been working to build up the joint at the Angels' facility in Tempe, Ariz.

--INF Dallas McPherson signed a one-year contract with the Florida Marlins. McPherson missed the entire 2007 season while recovering from back surgery and was not offered a contract for 2008 by the Angels. He will compete for the third base job vacated when the Marlins traded Miguel Cabrera to Detroit.

--RHP Jered Weaver reported to spring training a year ago with a sore shoulder -- the result of a heavy workload in his rookie year and a poor offseason conditioning program. This winter, Weaver's plan included spending time working out with Angels ace John Lackey in Southern California. Weaver opened the season on the DL in 2007.

--Angels GM Tony Reagins said he did not talk to representatives of the Minnesota Twins in the days before they traded LHP Johan Santana to the Mets -- an indication that the Angels were not one of the teams given a chance by the Twins to make their best final offer. Santana's demands for a contract extension in the neighborhood of $150 million apparently cooled the Angels' interest in pursuing a trade for him.

--Aguilas Cibaenas beat Tigres del Licey, five games to three, in the championship series of the Dominican winter league. Angels RHP Ervin Santana finished the postseason with a 3-1 record and 2.13 ERA for Licey. Both teams qualified for the Caribbean Series beginning Saturday.

--INF Erick Aybar is RHP Ervin Santana's teammate on Licey but did not fare as well in winter ball. Aybar made 19 errors in 35 regular-season games, then batted just .209 in the extended postseason. He did tie for the playoff lead with six stolen bases (in six attempts).

BY THE NUMBERS
.284 -- Angels' team batting average in 2007 (the highest in franchise history).

QUOTE TO NOTE
"He probably wouldn't have upgraded our starting pitching to the point of seeing all that talent go -- and the talent we might not be able to re-sign next year." -- Angels manager Mike Scioscia on pursuing a trade for LHP Johan Santana.

1.  Sign John Lackey, if he is willing, to a 5 year, 90 million deal (that's 18 mil per).

2.  Trade Jered Weaver and Gary Matthews Jr. to the Doyers for Matt Kemp and

The Angels announced that Steve Physioc and Rex Hudler would not be returning to the Angels' broadcast booth next season. I'm not sure how I feel about this. I've never been a fan of Physioc, he just comes off as too corny and "aw shucks" for my taste. But Hudler has always been entertaining, even while repeatedly talking himself ...(more)

The Angels should do everything they can to keep Lackey, and yes if that means paying him $18 million a year for 5 years then do it.  My reasons are simple, for one show some loyalty to a guy who has done nothing but get better each year he has been with us. Two, Lackey is a clutch big game big situation pitcher. Three, Lackey has a ba ...(more)

There have been specualating rumor that the Angels are about to make a trade.  Not just one trade but several.  One of them might be B Wood, E Santana, G Matthews Jr and pitching prospect J Walden to Toronto for R Halladay.   Even though they hate to give up E Santana that is who Toronto wanted, a starter to replace Hall ...(more)

MLBTRADERUMORS just reported that granderson has become a possibilty for a trade... I think the Angels showed look very closely into this... they could eat GMJ contract and replace him with granderson ... This would allow figgy to walk and wood to play third full time...
this gives us a 5 tool lead off hitter and moves juan rivera to

I'm glad they signed Abreu. Now we need to re-sign John Lackey. I do not care what the cost is, Keep in mind that John Lackey has been our bull dog since 2002. He is a clutch pitcher and we need to show him some loyalty. Boras is not his agent, so I think if they brought him in expressed how much he means to us and get a deal don ...(more)

Fuentes,Shields & Putz would be outstanding...
Putz power pitching is more condusive to the 9th inning situations, sometimes needing a k....
Fuentes & Shields set up & give the halos many options w/ their versatile arms...
The pen would get longer w/ these 3 guys...
No disrespect to Fuentes,he did a good job...I just think a power arm like Smith,Percy,K-Rod  i.e

The Angels enter the off season with $50 million in expiring contracts. The club, roughly, had a payroll of $114M in 2009. I will give my suggestions on what the team needs to do as they prepare for 2010. Note: Age in parenthesis, money they made in 2009.

Vladimir Guererro (35) $15M - Vladdy had a good po ...(more)
