Angels report: Inside pitch

Inside pitch · Notes, quotes · Roster

Nothing about Kelvim Escobar's third and final rehab start in Class AAA on Monday has given the Angels pause. The right-hander is still expected to start Saturday in Detroit -- his first major league start since the 2007 season.

"He gave up some runs, but all the reports were good," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said.

Escobar yielded five runs, eight hits, two walks and a hit batter in five innings for Class AAA Salt Lake. He threw 87 pitches, only 46 strikes -- but that had more to do with the rainy weather and wet field than any problems with Escobar's surgically repaired shoulder, according to Angels pitching coach Mike Butcher.

"He started out OK, then it started raining, then it got pretty wet out there on the mound," said Butcher, who watched video of Escobar's outing. "Velocity was good. The fastball was coming out of his hand with a lot of life. His delivery is in check.

"Stuff-wise, his breaking ball looked good. Changeup looked good. Split was great. ... Health-wise, there are absolutely no concerns."

Escobar traveled to Toronto on Tuesday and is tentatively scheduled to throw a bullpen session before Wednesday's game as a final test of his shoulder. If he comes out of that feeling fine, he will start Saturday in Detroit, bumping unbeaten Matt Palmer (5-0) to the bullpen.

BLUE JAYS 6, ANGELS 4: The Angels got to Blue Jays ace Roy Halladay for four runs in the seventh inning, but it was too little, too late by then. Halladay struck out a career-high 14 in the complete-game victory. The Angels have now lost five of their past six and 16 of their past 23 games at the Rogers Centre.
