Angels report: Inside pitch

Inside pitch · Notes, quotes · Roster

While GM Tony Reagins searches for pitching help before the July 31 trade deadline, manager Mike Scioscia knows what would help solve the season-long bullpen issues.

"Part of the solution is our starters getting deeper in games," Scioscia said. "In the first half, that wasn't happening much. That stretched some roles in the bullpen.

"The bottom line is the whole pitching staff has to blend together. I do feel we can hold leads. But it has been a little hit or miss leading up to this point."

That is a different story for the Angels. They have relied on strong pitching as the foundation for the recent dominance in the AL West. But injuries and inconsistency have forced Scioscia to get more creative with his pitching choices.

Darren Oliver, Justin Speier and Jason Bulger have handled the critical outs leading up to closer Brian Fuentes. Kevin Jepsen is now pitching his way into consideration.

"We've probably gone on (recent) performance this year as far as trying to develop roles more than in past years," Scioscia said. "It's not like one guy has emerged. Right now, we're doing it more by committee, trying to get those outs leading up to Brian.

"We're definitely searching for a little continuity, and if it never comes and we have to mix it up all year, then that's what you do."

ANGELS 6, TWINS 5 (10 innings): The Angels needed extra innings to record their major league-high 31st comeback victory. Down 3-0 before they came to bat in the first inning and 5-3 when Twins closer Joe Nathan took the mound in the bottom of the ninth, the Angels got two-out RBI singles by Gary Matthews Jr. and Howie Kendrick off Nathan to tie the game.

In the 10th, Mike Napoli drove in the game-winning run with an RBI double.
