Angels report: Notes, quotes
--The Angels were upset with a pair of calls during pinch-hitter Nick Green's at-bat in the ninth inning Wednesday. Green checked his swing on an 0-and-2 pitch then worked the count full and walked on a pitch at the knees that the Angels thought should have been called a strike. "He missed a call. He missed two calls that inning," LHP Brian Fuentes said of home plate umpire Rick Reed. "That ball was not low."
--After having the two calls go against him in the ninth inning, Fuentes questioned whether some umpires are intimidated by the atmosphere at Fenway Park. "You hear it from guys (players)," Fuentes said. "They (umpires) get a little timid to make a call... It's either human mistakes or they're scared. Maybe it's coincidence, maybe it's not. It's something you have to live with, I guess."
--Thursday's series finale in Boston will be the first time the Angels face Sox RHP Josh Beckett since a benches-clearing incident on April 12 in Anaheim. Beckett threw a brushback pitch at Bobby Abreu after he had called time and stepped out of the box. Beckett was suspended five games for the incident. "Forget about that," Abreu said of the reunion with Beckett. "It happened early in the season. It was something that wasn't supposed to happen... That's in the past."
--The preliminary 2010 schedule was released, and the Angels are scheduled to open next season at home against the Minnesota Twins on April 5. They will be home against the Dodgers, Brewers and Rockies in interleague play and will travel to Dodger Stadium, Busch Stadium in St. Louis and Wrigley Field in Chicago.
BY THE NUMBERS
3 -- The longest losing streak by the Angels this season. They are the only team in the majors not to have a four-game losing streak this season. Only 37 teams in baseball history have gone an entire season without a four-game losing streak, most recently the 2005 St. Louis Cardinals.
QUOTE TO NOTE
"A little healthy competition in the clubhouse is a good thing. I don't want those guys to one-up me. I want to do even better than them. But when they're out there, I'm the biggest cheerleader they have." -- RHP John Lackey, on the recent run of quality starts by Angels pitchers.
