At various points this season, you could have made strong cases for Torii Hunter, Chone Figgins or Kendry Morales as the Angels' most valuable player.

But manager Mike Scioscia said his choice would be someone else.

"I think Bobby Abreu," Scioscia said. "For one simple reason -- the balance he's provided on the offensive side."

Abreu leads the Angels in on-base percentage (.394) and has added an element of plate discipline that was sorely lacking in the Angels' lineup the past few seasons. The veteran has also been a mentor to the Angels' younger Latin players like Morales, Erick Aybar and Maicer Izturis.

"If Torii Hunter hadn't gotten injured, I think Torii Hunter is the Most Valuable Player in the American League," Scioscia said of Hunter, who carried the Angels early in the season but missed five weeks on the DL with a groin injury. "But Bobby brought a very special need for our club -- a guy who drives in a hundred runs, who's going to score 100 runs, all the walks, getting on base the way he has, his versatility hitting in different spots in the lineup.

"He's what we call a swing guy -- a guy you set the table for who can drive in a lot of runs but who also sets the table for the rest of our lineup. Bobby's been as good a swing guy as there is in baseball for how many years now?"

Abreu and Albert Pujols are the only players in baseball to drive in 100 runs each of the last seven seasons. Abreu also has scored at least 98 runs in each of the last 10 seasons.

ANGELS 5, RANGERS 2: The Angels officially eliminated the Rangers from wild-card contention with another victory. Sean O'Sullivan held the Rangers to two runs and three hits to get the victory, his first since getting off to a 3-0 start in his first five big-league games. Bobby Abreu had a solo home run and Mike Napoli drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single.

Here’s the deal Halo fans: Lackey went to the Tea Party, Figgins a homecoming in Seattle, Vlad to continue his destruction of the ballpark in Arlington with Oliver, who plans to begin his retirement. So the Mariners and Rangers picked up some talent; the ...(more)

I live in NH so I often check this page for fellow Angels talk. Looking forward to the season, hopeful that the starting rotation we have can compete with just about any team. Man, Napoli is proving he needs to play regularly - we need the pop he provides. Do we take a small hit defensively, sure but if our pitching is solid it won't matter ...(more)

No one has made a thread in like a month! I need to stir up the message board here are some points people can get started on:

1. Spring struggles:

the Angels are like 2-9-2 so far. not neccesarily worried, but whats going on?

2. The health:

I am still amazed we are

The Angels are stuggling to score runs and thats going to be threr down fall this year.  They need to get rid of the dunnage.  B Wood is not pulling his weight both on the field or at the plate this summer and the outfield this summer is already is showing signs of injury and getting tired and they have only played 5 games or so.& ...(more)

I might as well start my own baseball sight, as Baseball Prospectus picks the Angels to finish last in the west. I'm not joking this is their prediction. Seattle 84 - 78 Texas 83-79 Oakland 82-80 and the Angels at 79-83.  They predict the Angels will score the most runs in the West 799 but they will have the worst pitching and give up ...(more)

Early spring observance is the bats need a lot of improvement. There are only two sticks hitting the ball and they are Napoli and Morales. Glad we don't open the season now, though the pitching is looking good. I hope we catch fire later this spring like last year and carry the great offense into the season. Question for Angel fans do you think our offense will be enough this year?

Dear Angel Fans:  The way the Hot Stove season has played out so far, your front office must make another major move.  If everyone stays pat, the " Sailors " from the Northwest are going to take the A.L. West Division with you Texas and the Red Sox chasing the wild card.  When the smoke clears, " Bean Town " will take it.&nbs ...(more)

First of all I have been an ANGEL fan for 45 years and I love what Mike Sciocioa does as the manager but Mr Reagin doesn't give him much to work with and this year he has less than last year.  What does Mr Reagin amd Mr Moreno expect?  I think the Angels are still a 3B and away from keeping up with the so called Jones ...(more)

As a Yankee fan I was very sorry to see him leave. He is a natural as a hitter, but even more important, he is at his best when the score is close, tied, or in the ninth when you need something right then and there. He will surprise you in a very good way.

In blowouts or when the game is not on the line, he performs less well. But then, you won't care anyway.

Bad news in Angel land. Kendry Morales is switching agents to Scott Borras. We know Arte doesn't want to deal with this back staber. It looks like the future is dim with Weaver and Morales being represented, by the worst thing to happen in baseball, Mr. Greed. Even in a down economy they will get top dollar else where. Why own a ...(more)
