Angels report: Notes, quotes

Notes, quotes · Inside pitch · Roster

--RHP Joel Pineiro threw approximately 60 pitches in a four-inning simulated game Tuesday afternoon. He will be evaluated over the next couple of days and could be activated from the disabled list later in the week. Pineiro has been out since July 28 with a strained oblique muscle in his left side.

--RHP Scot Shields left the game in the seventh inning after feeling tightness in his pitching elbow while working a full count against Indians OF Trevor Crowe. Shields was examined by Dr. Lewis Yocum after the game and said the pain was a normal discomfort that he feels "every now and then -- I'm fine."

--RHP Francisco Rodriguez faced four batters in the sixth inning and didn't retire any of them, allowing a single, walking two batters and then giving up a grand slam to Indians C Lou Marson. It was the eighth grand slam allowed by Angels pitchers this season. That is the most in the American League and third in the majors behind the Mets (11) and Brewers (nine).

--OF Torii Hunter drove in the Angels' only run with a solo home run in the fifth inning Tuesday. Since going 20 games without an RBI, Hunter has at least one in each of the past four games, and he's hit home runs in three of the four games. He is batting .345 (10-for-29) during his current eight-game hitting streak.

--UT Robb Quinlan was released Tuesday. Quinlan hit just .121 in 23 games with the Angels this season and .258 in 34 games for Class AAA Salt Lake, where he spent the final two months of the season on the disabled list. In parts of eight seasons with the Angels, Quinlan hit .276 with 25 home runs.

BY THE NUMBERS
26 -- Runs scored by the Angels in RHP Jered Weaver's past 14 starts, through Sept. 4.

QUOTE TO NOTE
"I'm embarrassed by the way we're playing. We can't get any run support for our starting pitchers. We can't hit with runners in scoring position -- we barely get runners in scoring position. And when we do, I think maybe we try a little too hard." -- OF Torii Hunter.
