Angels report: Notes, quotes
--The starting rotation has shrunk down to four for the time being. Aided by Thursday's rainout and Monday's off day, the Angels will go with a four-man rotation, meaning RHP Kevin Gregg is the odd man out.
RHP Ervin Santana will open the Toronto series on Tuesday. Gregg, who is filling in for injured starter RHP Bartolo Colon, will be back in the rotation on Saturday.
--RHP Bartolo Colon, who is on the disabled list with inflammation in his right shoulder, threw off a mound for the first time since the April 15 game when he was injured in Baltimore. Colon will pitch a simulated game and throw batting practice next week before going on a rehabilitation assignment.
"What he does will be contingent on how he comes out of each workout," Manager Mike Scioscia said.
--Thursday's rubber game of the three-game series in Chicago was rained out. It was the Angels' only scheduled trip to Chicago this season, but now they will have to return for one game. No makeup date has been announced, yet but the teams share common off dates of May 25, July 13 and August 7.
--DH Tim Salmon hit his second homer of the season at Angel Stadium and his fifth overall. Salmon made the team as a non-roster invitee in spring training after undergoing surgery to his left knee and shoulder in 2004 and missing all of last year. His five homers are second on the team to OF Vladimir Guerrero.
"Sitting out all last year and part of the year before; that was killing him," Jarrod Washburn, a former Angel, said. "I was extremely happy to see that he was able to come back and be healthy enough to make the team."
--C Mike Napoli is earning himself more playing time. After not making the Opening Day roster as the team went with C Jeff Mathis, Napoli was called up when Mathis was sent down last week after hitting .103. In 15 at-bats, including a 1-for-3 performance on Friday, Napoli is hitting .267 with one homer and three RBI.
BY THE NUMBERS
12 -- The Angels have scored this many runs in their past two games, a season-high. The 24 runs in the past two games is two less than they scored over the previous 11 games combined.
QUOTE TO NOTE
"It's up to everybody, not just a group of guys. Everybody is expected to pull their own weight." -- OF Garret Anderson, when asked if the veterans on the team felt more pressure to perform because of so many Triple-A call-ups on the club.
