Diamondbacks report: Notes, quotes

Notes, quotes · Inside pitch · Roster

--Kevin Seitzer, who ended his playing career in 1997 and has never coached professionally, was named the Diamondbacks' new hitting coach. He replaced Mike Aldrete, who resigned from his position after the 2006 season to spend more time with his family.

Seitzer said his hiring "is a bold move" by the Diamondbacks, but added, "It's something that's going to pay off in the long run."

Seitzer has worked with dozens of professional and college hitters on a freelance basis since retiring.

--Deron Sutton, the son of Hall of Fame pitcher Don Sutton, signed a five-year contract to become the new voice of the Diamondbacks. He replaces television play-by-play man Thom Brennaman, who left the club after the 2006 season to join his father, Marty, calling games in Cincinnati. Sutton, 37, will be paired in the booth with analyst Mark Grace. Sutton's contract carries a club option for three additional years.

--INF Mark Reynolds, a 16th-round draft pick in 2004, was hitting .350 with four home runs after 60 at-bats in the Arizona Fall League for Scottsdale. Reynolds, who has played all four infield positions as well as some left field, is hoping to find a position with the Diamondbacks that will allow him to make the quick climb to the majors.

"Hopefully, I can find a spot, but if utility is my ticket," he said, "I'm going to punch it."

--SS Yunesky Sanchez, a Cuban defector, signed a minor league contract with Arizona. Sanchez, 22, likely will begin next season in Class A.

--Bob Minor, 50, has been hired to be the Diamondbacks' Western scouting supervisor. He leaves the Mets after spending 25 years with the organization.

BY THE NUMBERS
2 -- Diamondbacks players to have won a Gold Glove with the team. 2B Orlando Hudson won the honor for 2006, joining CF Steve Finley, who captured the honor twice (1999 and 2000).
