Braves report: Inside pitch

The one and only time the Braves played chicken with agent Scott Boras, they lost Kevin Millwood. That's the year the Braves offered arbitration to free agent Greg Maddux, assuming he wouldn't take it and a return on a one-year deal.

Wrong.

Maddux's acceptance threw a wrench into the Braves' payroll, and they had to trade Millwood to the Phillies for catcher Johnny Estrada to accommodate Maddux into their rotation and budget.

This year, Braves reliever Mike Gonzalez took on Boras as his agent shortly before filing for free agency.

What's different this time around is that the Braves could live with it if Gonzalez came back for a year at a large salary. But they can be confident that Boras and Gonzalez won't accept anything but a long-term offer.

Gonzalez has enjoyed being with the Braves, but he worked for free agency, and he is going to take advantage of it. With the dearth of left-handed pitchers, never mind closers, on the market, he is in the driver's seat.

The other difference is the Braves' general manager. Former GM John Schuerholz was not a negotiator; he made his best offer and expected the same of a player's agent. When Boras had staffers send a preliminary e-mail to Schuerholz outlining what Schuerholz regarded as an outlandish salary for then free agent center fielder Andruw Jones, Schuerholz did not even reply. In his view, if that was their starting offer, there was nothing to discuss.

Current Braves GM Frank Wren, formerly Schuerholz's assistant, is different. He shrugs off ploys. But he is also in a slightly better position payroll-wise; he can afford to absorb one or two larger one-year salaries if it gets to that point.

I thing the Angels are going to lose Lackey and they will be willing to listen to a deal for Lowe.  If we offer them 2 mil per year on his contract plus one or two minor league players (not on the Braves 40 man roster) I thing we could get Rivera and Evans (plays OF & 3B).&n ...(more)

Before you bust an artery chuckling on this idea...ponder it before clicking away to better entertain yourself. Okay...since you are still here, I'll try to keep your attention the best way I can. How about a trade involving the Chicago White Sox' Paul Konerko and ...(more)

I read that the Braves are interested in Miguel especially since the Tigers might be talked into eating 5 million a year of his contract, that is well worth a trade that includes Jordan Schafer and ...(more)

Guys --

Are you aware that Ted Turner (a few weeks ago) appeared on Good Morning America and declared publicly his intentions to buy back the Braves?  That would be great if so.  He's not afraid to spend money.  Think about that.  If he did that quickly, maybe we could move in on Holliday or Bay.

I think about eveyone is ready to write Derek Lowe off. Yes, he had somewhat of an up and down season, but I don't think I'm comfortable with Atlanta wanting to just dump him off for anything. He is still (IMO) a front line starter. He won 15 games, and he was really lights out when he was on. He has admitted there was something wr ...(more)

What about a trade for Gaines Adams? He is a pretty good player and will be better than anyone we can get in the draft. He is probably cheap too. He doesn't even start for them but he probably would with us.

This is just a far fetched idea but if we get a pick in the 20s trade the Chiefs our pick and get our old 2nd round pick and theirs too. Then we can send the bears our old 2nd

Ok so we give Derek Lowe away for a middle reliever and a prospect (that's all we can hope for), unless we want to eat part of his contract...
Now we trade Javier Vasquez and B.Jones for Nelson Cruz.  So we just freed up 26.5 million in payroll + 6 million (for soriano)

Now we make a trade for

First, just mere speculation  on my behalf as I scan different souces regarding MLB possible player destinations for 2010. So, don't get too frazzled when I try to construct the remote possibility of having our outfield and first base positions filled by a "De...Addition" for this upcoming season. That would be the "DeLightful" combination of David De Jesus (K.C. ...(more)

..Gary Sheffield.  Yes I said it.   In 268 at bats for the Mets he hit 10 homers, 43 rbi and hit .276

Shef loved playing for Bobby Cox and if he gets 450-500 ab's he should have decent numbers..  around 20 hr's, 85-90 rbi.  He shouldn't cost that much and in my opinion fits the gap nicely til our
