--3B Chipper Jones hit a two-run home run in his first at-bat to give him 1,509 career RBI, tying him with the legendary Mickey Mantle for second on the all-time RBI list for switch-hitters. Eddie Murray ranks first with 1,917, which Jones doesn't see himself passing. He thinks he walks too much, for one thing.
--INF/OF Martin Prado is now the Braves' emergency center fielder since OF/2B Matt Young was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett on April 22; the Braves needed another arm in the bullpen when LHP Jonny Venters experienced a sore left biceps.
--C Brian McCann was going to get Wednesday's day game off, but that was before he caught all 13 innings Monday. So manager Fredi Gonzalez started C David Ross Tuesday. Ross homered in the second inning to put the Braves up 3-0, then hit a three-run home run in the sixth to put the game out of reach.
--RHP Cristhian Martinez is the bullpen's three-innings guy, but it's not supposed to be the last three innings, manager Fredi Gonzalez says. Martinez has given up three home runs in three outings, including two walk-offs. He's in that position because RHP Scott Linebrink is blowing leads.
--INF Brandon Hicks was not being faulted by 3B Chipper Jones for having been thrown out at third base after pinch-running for Jones, who hit a lead-off double in the 12th inning of Monday's 5-3 13-inning loss. That's because it took "a great play" on a C Brian McCann dribbler to Padres LHP Cory Luebke to get him. But Hicks has shortcomings at shortstop, which is why it is unlikely he'll be seen starting a home game on the fast Turner Field infield. And he is not hitting either.
BY THE NUMBERS
1 -- Career complete games by RHP Jair Jurrjens, who pitched the Braves to an 8-2 win over the Padres Tuesday.
QUOTE TO NOTE
"Close your eyes and swing hard." -- C David Ross, on how he hit two home runs -- the second a three-run homer -- off Padres RHP Aaron Harang.
