Notes, Quotes
--3B Chipper Jones got a planned start off Monday, and he needed it. The right hamstring that has bothered him since he woke up one day in Arizona or Anaheim -- he doesn't remember for certain -- is getting better by the day. "It's not any one play," Jones said. "You know what I'm saying? You wake up one morning and it doesn't feel right." But the sore right knee is starting to bark again. He had two cortisone shots in it two weeks ago, and the limit is once every three months for a shot in the same place. He pinch-hit in the bottom of the ninth and stayed in the game.
--C Brian McCann (back stiffness) got up early Monday and worked out, so he was ornery and raring to go the moment he got to the clubhouse. And when he saw his name in the third spot in the batting order, as 3B Chipper Jones got a planned start off, McCann yelped in delight. McCann drove in both the Braves' runs on a 3-for-5 day.
--RHP Martin Prado scored both of the Braves' runs, getting on in the first inning on a fielder's choice and a third inning double, his 14th of the season. He also went from playing left field to third base and back again to left as manager Fredi Gonzalez manipulated his relief pitching in the late innings. Typically, Prado was heading to the video room, then to the weight room after the game.
--RHP Peter Moylan, back in the clubhouse after undergoing surgery to repair a bulging disk in his lower back, is doing absolutely nothing for the next 2 1/2 weeks. He isn't even horsing around with his teammates in the dugout, for fear of setting back his recovery. He is expected to be out for three months and is on the 60-day disabled list.
--RHP Kris Medlen, rehabbing from last season's Tommy John surgery, threw 80 curve balls in a side session on Friday, the first he's thrown breaking stuff, and has felt great ever since. "I don't know what happened," he said happily, but he'll take it.
BY THE NUMBERS
12 -- Walk-off hits for 3B Chipper Jones, who ended Sunday's 12-inning game versus the Reds with a walk-off single.
QUOTE TO NOTE
"That was brutal. It was nowhere in the same area code as Gonzo." -- RHP Tim Hudson, on his errant throw in the first inning, which set up the Padres' first run.
