Orioles report: Inside pitch

The frustrating at-bats are still there. But for every ill-advised swing leading to a strikeout, Adam Jones can be seen in another plate appearance showing signs of stardom.

The Orioles center fielder went 2-for-4 Friday and has hit in eight consecutive games. He's batting .469 (15-for-32) in that stretch, and since June 1 he has batted .336 (38-for-113) to raise his average 34 points to .279.

Manager Dave Trembley attributes Jones' improvement to better pitch recognition. Jones often has been overmatched against tough breaking balls.

"One of the things I've been working on is having good at-bats," Jones said. "Make the pitcher throw five or six pitches to one hitter, it can turn out to be something good. Laying off the junk."

Jones was the Orioles' most noteworthy addition of the offseason, coming east in the trade that sent ace left-hander Erik Bedard to Seattle. He was anointed the everyday center fielder, and the club has been patient with him through tough times.

Jones' biggest drawback is his plate discipline. He came to Baltimore with the reputation of being a free swinger, and he's lived up to that title for the most part. Jones has struck out 73 times and walked just 16, putting him on pace for 139 strikeouts and 30 free passes.

Above all else, though, the former shortstop has also settled into his role defensively. The athletic, 6-foot-2, 210-pound defender glides easily through the outfield, and has made the difficult catches look routine. He's been playing shallow in center field of late, drawing comparisons to former Orioles outfielder Paul Blair.

ORIOLES 10, RANGERS 4: The top and bottom thirds of the Orioles lineup accounted for every RBI and 10 of 12 hits. Starter Jeremy Guthrie (5-7) lasted 6 1/3 innings, scattering eight hits and four runs for the Orioles, who have won in three of their ace's last four starts.

Now that the baseball season has concluded, teams have about two weeks of exclusive rights to negotiate with their free agents. The Orioles have no potentially significant free agents to speak of, but do have a couple of interesting decisions to make. Relievers Mark Hendr ...(more)

So apparently Aroldis Chapman met with the O's today. In case you didn't know, he is the 22 year old Cuban lefty that has been known to hit the radar gun with a consistant 100 mph fastball. But I wouldn't get my hopes up on this one everyone. Chapman is eventually going to get the biggest paycheck by either the Angels, ...(more)

Armando Gambino was claimed off waivers by the Orioles from the Twins today. All I can say is who? Per rotoworld he posted a 2.94 era in Triple A in 98 innings but was shelled in a brief stint in the majors.25 years old and nothing more than a bullpen guy at best.

All Orioles fans know that the Baltimore front office will be looking for players to improve the club. There are three areas that appear to be the priorities. The need for a corner infielder with right handed power, a veteran pitcher and a bullpen arm or two. I don't think anyone can argue against that strategy. But this thread isn' ...(more)

(POLL) I've been reading the paper and MacPhail was said to mention he would like to sign a player like Glaus, Delgado or Beltre. Now I was thinking about which player I would like to play on this Oriole's team and I'm not quite sure yet. I don't want Glaus because I feel like he doesn' have it in him anymore and I've just never been a Glaus fan. So to me it comes between Beltre and Delgado. If I ha ...(more)

The team also hired Jeff Datz as bench coach. Datz spent the past eight seasons on the Cleveland Indians' staff, including four years as bench coach.

I just read on MLBTR that Carlos Lee might be available from Houston because of his contract over the next 3 years. Most agree that we need a big right-handed bat in the lineup, and he sure can be that. Plus, we can put him at DH, and either move Scott to 1st or trade him for more organizational depth or a veteran starting pitcher. What do you guys think?

Just a little thread to lighten the mood, make some jokes about ourselves and our team, and really just have a good time. I'll get this started.

These guys are doing amazing in the Arizon Fall League and hopefully this is a sign to come. Snyder currently leads the league with 15 RBI's and Josh Bell is second in the league with a .464. AVG. I'm very excited that these guys are doing so well because I want these guys to be our long term corner infielders. Snyder has moved around at many positions during the minors and seems to have fina ...(more)

The Orioles board has been dead so I thought I'd start a fun thread...

Over 12 years have passed since Oct. 15, 1997 when the Orioles - bidding to tie the ALCS at 3 games apiece - lost a heartbreaking Game 6 to the Indians, 1-0 in 11 innings.  I was stuck in traffic o
