Crawford regains his touch at the plate

Don't look now, but Carl Crawford has raised his average to .244, a number that never has seemed so good to the Red Sox left fielder.

Crawford has gone 8-for-9 with two doubles, two triples, one home run, five RBI and five runs in Boston's last two games. He has back-to-back four-hit games for the first time in his career, and he's the first Red Sox player to post back-to-back four-hit games since Dustin Pedroia did so on Aug. 29-30, 2008.

Not coincidentally, the Red Sox have scored 14 runs in back-to-back games for the first time since 1998.

"It feels real good just to be able to hit the ball and play it like my old self," Crawford said after a rain-shortened 14-1 rout of the Tigers on Thursday. "I haven't felt that way in a long time, so to have that feeling back for a few days, it felt great."

Asked if a pair of four-hit games are what he needs to take off toward .300 (his career average is .294), Crawford said, "Normally it does. We just have to see how it goes. I've been feeling good the last few days. You try to keep that feel for the next few days, so hopefully it won't go away just like that."

Gone, it would seem, are Crawford's days in the No. 8 spot. Right fielder J.D. Drew, who has batted sixth for most of the season, might miss another few days because of a right hamstring strain. And even when he does return, he has only five extra-base hits (three doubles, two homers) in his last 101 plate appearances.

"We said we're going to enjoy it," manager Terry Francona said of when Crawford starts swinging a hot bat after batting .155 in April. "It's been two days in a row where it's four hits, and they're good swings. He's squaring up balls. He's pulling balls in the gap. He's using his legs. It was a matter of time, but it's certainly nice to see."
