Cubs report: Inside pitch

Starting pitching has been a strength of the Cubs in recent years, but their depth took a hit Nov. 3 when left-hander Ted Lilly had arthroscopic surgery on his pitching shoulder.

Lilly, who emerged as the de facto ace of the Cubs staff this year, had been bothered by inflammation in July. He also went 12 days between starts in late September because of lingering shoulder issues. The Cubs said the surgery was just a "cleanup" and that Lilly suffered no significant structural damage to the shoulder.

At the end of the season, Lilly and the Cubs trainers and doctors decided surgery wasn't needed at that time, and rest was prescribed. Unfortunately for Lilly and the Cubs, the shoulder didn't get better, and Lilly had it 'scoped.

The upshot is that Lilly will not begin throwing for four months, which means early March at best. He is likely to open the 2010 regular season on the disabled list, but he and the Cubs expressed confidence will be ready to pitch sometime in April.

"It was something I didn't want to do, but I also started to feel that after a month and it still wasn't getting better, I had thoughts of going into the season and trying to battle through shoulder problems all year, and I just didn't want to do that," Lilly said of opting for surgery. "The understanding I've been given is that there was no serious labral work done, no significant rotator cuff (damage). When he went in there, it didn't look really bad. It was just one of those things that was causing me problems."

Heading into the free agent and trading season, general manager Jim Hendry has three starters in his rotation: right-handers Carlos Zambrano, Ryan Dempster and Randy Wells. Unless Hendry makes a trade or signs a free agent, jobs will be there to be had in spring training.

The first several threads I looked at this morning are talking about how terrible 2B is. Everyone is saying we need to get Figgins to play 2B, or go spend a lot of money on some FA.

I say give Jeff Baker a chance. He's shown some decent pop for a middle infielder, and he hit over .300 when on the

The Cubs need to go after Dan Uggla to fill 2B.  There are zero candidates available thru free agency that would fit what the Cubs need.  Trade some young talent to the Marlins for Uggla and soon since ...(more)

They were saying on MLBTraderumors that Stephen Drew will probably be put on the trading block,so why not trade for Drew and move Theriot over to 2nd,Drew would add a left hand bat to the lineup. Then the Cubs could spend the money on decent bullpen help for the first time ...(more)

B.A. has started posting their team by team prospect list for 2010.  So far only the Braves and Mets are listed, but the Cubs will be up on November 16.

My guess on their list is

There is another guy, played 1b, 2b, ss, 3b, and of in his career, has a decent glove, a little speed, and can hit for average that just hit free agency. He may not be the best, but why not try Felipe Lopez? He got 3.5 million last year, and may not be a bad idea.

Ricketts would be wise to open up the wallet a bit to squeeze Figgins into the Cubs lineup.  Solves the Cubs need for a leadoff hitter with speed and he's a switch hitter that can defensively handle CF.  This article compares him to Brian Roberts and mentions Rob ...(more)
