Cubs report: Inside pitch

The Cubs finalized the worst-kept secret in the world with their recent re-signing of left-handed reliever John Grabow to a two-year deal.

General manager Jim Hendry expressed an interest in keeping Grabow soon after the Cubs obtained him in a July 30 trade with the Pirates.

The move means that the Cubs' bullpen is nearly completed, although Hendry won't rule out obtaining another arm before spring training, provided that the price is right for the budget-conscious club.

Grabow will be the top left-handed setup man to closer Carlos Marmol. From the left side, Grabow could be joined by either Sean Marshall or Tom Gorzelanny, or both, depending on how the rotation shakes out. Either Marshall or Gorzelanny could see some time as a starter.

From the right side, Angel Guzman appears to be the top setup man. The rest of the picture also depends how the starting staff shapes up, with Jeff Samardzija batting for a job as a starter. Most of Samardzija's big-league time has come as a starter, and he'll again be in the spring training mix for the rotation.

"It's a long way away, and I certainly wouldn't discount the fact that somebody could be added to the 'pen throughout the offseason," Hendry said.

Why are the Cubs so eager to let Rich Harden go?  Apparently they're not going to offer him arbitration, so in essence he can sign with anyone now.  He made 15 starts last year and insisted he was fine when the Cubs shut him down at the end of the year.  Either the docs have seen something that scares the bejeezes out of them ...(more)

(POLL)

Jim Hendry would NOT do this trade from what I'm reading and I personally would not give up Marmol and  Castro together. How many Cub fans would? Castro is already a 19 yr old legend and Marmol is becoming a real closer and developing a  closer personality, but  it's taken awhile ... Castro has not even been evaluated yet. We should at least do that before we decide his ...(more)

Got to love the Cubs and their infinite wisdom....when last years deadline came around and they just couldn't bear the thought of trading Rich Harden and getting something in return for him because they were in the "playoff race" (hahaha) I questioned their wisdom as I usually do...I mean how can you not question a team that has d ...(more)

I just read a article saying Bud Selig is stepping down after the 2011 season, all I can say is thank God,baseball will finally get rid of this ass clown,Its kind of funny that he's stepping down right before the new collective bargaining needs to be struck,I think he doesn't want anything to do with it,he probably knows there a good chance that there won't be a 2012 season, because the players unio ...(more)
