--LF Alfonso Soriano returned to the club after having his broken left hand X-rayed Thursday in Chicago. The Cubs were pleased with the news, which showed good healing. Soriano played catch before the game and hit some balls that were "soft-tossed" to him. It's possible he could take full batting practice Saturday or Sunday. He has been out since June 11, and the Cubs are now expressing hope that he could beat the original six-week timetable to come back.

--RHP Jose Ascanio was optioned to Class AAA Iowa as RHP Carlos Zambrano came off the DL. The move was expected, but the Cubs like the power arm and potential of Ascanio.

--LHP Ted Lilly will start Saturday against the Cardinals with LHP Sean Marshall going Sunday. Originally, the Cubs thought about giving Lilly an extra day, but they say he threw well on the side.

--RHP Carlos Marmol is not tipping his pitches, the Cubs concluded, after they watched films of his deliveries this year. Marmol gave up three-run homers in back-to-back games this week in San Francisco. Pitching coach Larry Rothschild said there is no tipping going on. The only problem, he said, is that Marmol is getting too many fastballs up in the zone.

--RHP Sean Gallagher will head to the bullpen now that RHP Carlos Zambrano is back. Gallagher has made 10 starts this year, and the Cubs still think his long-term future is as a starter.

BY THE NUMBERS
13 -- When C Geovany Soto hit his 13th home run of the season June 27, he became the first Cubs rookie with at least 13 since Rafael Palmeiro hit 14 in 1987. The last Cubs rookie catcher with at least 13 was Randy Hundley, who hit 19 in 1966.

QUOTE TO NOTE
"I guess 'Z' is back. I'm ready to rock and roll and get back to doing my job." -- Pitcher Carlos Zambrano, on his final preparations for coming off the DL.

Ken "Hawk" Harrelson by the end of his career will likely be considered the greatest sports broadcaster in Chicago sports history.  Even greater than Harry Caray, Jack Brickhouse or Pat Hughes.  Hawks great voice and southern charm will no doubt land him a Frick award just like Harry.

What makes Hawk superior to Cary is his use of catch phrases such as "Ga ...(more)

This is from a Sox fan, and I posted this as a note on facebook and on the Sox thread too. I guess you can just bypass the Sox stuff and go right to the Cubs. This is just my opinions, not trying to be a jacka*s or anything. Plus, I would like for cubs fans to answer a few of those questions, espically the ...(more)

Mr. Kruk is predicting that Carpenter is going to OWN the Cubs today ... I didn't care for him as a player and I certainly don't care for him as a analyst ... I'm hoping we put a 5 spot on him early

Some whisperings of Randy Wells' ROY potential starting to stir. All Cubs fans know that his win total should be higher, but it is what it is. I have rapidly become a fan of Wells, and was recently talking about the pitching staff with some family and we decided to rank th ...(more)

I read the Scott Miller take that the Cubs are the clear class of the Central Division and respectfully disagree. I thought going into this season that St. Louis was going to be very difficult to beat if they get any pitching. Even with the loss of Chris Carpenter t ...(more)

I know the Cubs likely do not have the resources to get him financially, but if you were the Jays would Vitters, Wells and another prospect (Stevens/Cashner/Archer/Castillo) at least put the Cubs on the radar?

I know there are some on here that do not think that SP is a need for the Cubs, but we are talking about a perennial Cy

Josh Vitters is the only cub on the list.  Anyone know how close he is to the majors?  Feel like I've been hearing about him forever.

I'm reading that Paul Sullivan went up to Carlos Zambrano with something like "according to a recent poll, 57.2% of Cubs fans want you traded..."  To which, Carlos responded something along the lines of "fine trade me to Boston."
