Pitching staff pieced together because of injuries

The Cubs are trying to squeeze everything they can from the Nos. 4 and 5 spots in their starting rotation, with right-handers Randy Wells and Andrew Cashner on the DL.

Righty Casey Coleman came up from Class AAA (Des Moines) Iowa Saturday and started Sunday's 6-5 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers. Manager Mike Quade wanted 80-85 pitches from Coleman, who delivered with 81 over five innings.

Left-hander James Russell comes out of the pen Tuesday to pitch at Houston after Ryan Dempster opens that series Monday night.

Quade has said he wants 45-50 pitches from Russell, who threw some extra pitches on the side over the weekend in Milwaukee. Russell has not started a major league game before, but he has 40 minor league starts, the most recent coming in 2009.

The top three of Dempster, Carlos Zambrano and Matt Garza will be counted on to carry the load, but Garza said after losing 6-0 to the Brewers that he's feeling no extra pressure.

"I highly doubt any of us are pressing right now," he said. "It's not September. It's barely the second week of the season. There is no pressure."
