For a team that doesn't really have a "true leadoff hitter," the Cubs are trying to catch a little lightning with a couple of kids.
In the series opener, that 1-2 combo reached base seven times, including six of their first six plate appearances.
Right fielder Kosuke Fukudome and second baseman Jeff Baker normally are the Cubs' main leadoff hitters, depending on matchups. But Fukudome is hobbled by a strained left hamstring, so Quade decided to let the kids play.
"Both of those played really, really well, and I like watching them," Quad said.
However, it doesn't appear that the Castro-Barney arrangement will be permanent.
"It's just a brief snapshot," Quade said. "There's a lot of baseball to play. But both of them are off to real good starts. They play with enthusiasm. Both are getting smarter every day. I think they fit real well together."
Castro was 2-for-5 Tuesday, and Barney was 0-for-4.
