Cubs report: Inside pitch

A three-game series against the team with the worst record in the National League could be what the doctor ordered for the Cubs when they visit Colorado starting Friday.

But the erratic way the Cubs have been playing lately, they can't take anything for granted.

The Cubs are not eliminated from the wild card race, but it would take a huge effort on their part to win and for all of the five teams ahead of them to fade.

The team could have done itself a huge favor by winning a three-game home series against a team fighting to stay out of the National League Central cellar -- Cincinnati on Aug. 8-10. But the Reds swept the Cubs to pad and eight-game Chicago losing streak.

Still, the Cubs were able to come back and win three out of four against powerhouse St. Louis and two out of three against Houston.

The Cubs have an off day on Thursday and manager Dusty Baker appreciates it before his pitchers head into the hitter's haven Coors Field.

"I always like to have an off day before Coors Field or after Coors Field," Baker said. "You might win the battle there but there is a chance you will lose the war by using all your pitchers.

"That last day (Sunday) will be important. You don't want to use a lot of pitchers and come home the next day to play the Braves. You don't want to come home with a tired bullpen."

Why are the Cubs so eager to let Rich Harden go?  Apparently they're not going to offer him arbitration, so in essence he can sign with anyone now.  He made 15 starts last year and insisted he was fine when the Cubs shut him down at the end of the year.  Either the docs have seen something that scares the bejeezes out of them ...(more)

The deadline for teams to offer arbitration to their eligible free agents came and went Tuesday night with a number of interesting names on a list of players who were not offered, meaning the team that signs them will not lose any draft pick compensation for doing so. As far as the Cubs' needs go, a few names stuck out from the list of ...(more)

Jim Hendry would NOT do this trade from what I'm reading and I personally would not give up Marmol and  Castro together. How many Cub fans would? Castro is already a 19 yr old legend and Marmol is becoming a real closer and developing a  closer personality, but  it's taken awhile ... Castro has not even been evaluated yet. We should at least do that before we decide his ...(more)

I just saw the salaries of our players for the 2009 season and it made me FURIOUS to think that we didnt at least make the playoffs thislast year. I know I'll get some flack for this but @##$!! Our line up is RIDDLED with players making 12,14,18 million per year. I mean come on people....now I see why you are hearing boos at Wrigley. Our corner outfielders are making 21 million next year ...a ...(more)

Got to love the Cubs and their infinite wisdom....when last years deadline came around and they just couldn't bear the thought of trading Rich Harden and getting something in return for him because they were in the "playoff race" (hahaha) I questioned their wisdom as I usually do...I mean how can you not question a team that has d ...(more)

We just signed Rudy Jaramillo to fill our vacant hitting coach spot yesterday. Would he be able to help Milton Bradley?

I see Bradley having a bounce back year. As a matter of fact, I see the entire Cubs team having a bounce back year.  They took last yea
