Jay Bruce, enmeshed in a season-long slump, other than home runs (18), got a seat in the dugout for a mental break for the second time this season.

After Bruce went 0-for-4 with a strikeout Wednesday, dropping his average to .209, manager Dusty Baker decided to sit his 22-year-old "for a couple of days to let him clear his head." Bruce grounded out as a pinch hitter Thursday.

Bruce's power has stayed steady, and his defense remains intact, as he is tied for the major league lead in outfield assists (10) with Washington's Elijah Dukes.

"He can study our guys -- who is hitting and who is not and why -- and he can study their guys like Chase Utley and Ryan Howard," Baker said. "He can see how they approach things, how they set up.

"Sometime you get in that funnel, man, and it's like being in a tornado. And as I told Bruce, 'You didn't get in this in a month, and you're not going to get out of it in a month.' It's a slow, steady process in trying to recall what your mind-set was when you thought nobody could get you out."

Bruce doesn't agree, saying, "I might come out of it in one day."

PHILLIES 9, REDS 6: The Reds couldn't hold leads of 3-0 and 6-4, giving up four walks in the fifth inning that led to four Phillies runs, as Philadelphia took the lead for good. 3B Edwin Encarnacion gave the Reds a 3-0 lead on a two-run triple and a solo home run. 2B Brandon Phillips broke a 4-4 tie with a two-run home run before the Phillies came back.

I have stayed off of Dusty's back this year, frankly because he hadn't done anything too idiotic to tick me off... until last night.

Explain to me a few things:

1.  The only person in our dugout who had seen last night's pitcher more than 2 or 3 times was Jonny Gomes... and he was hitting over

So, I figure after this historically awful series against the Phillies we needed something to make us feel better.  Here is what I got: Todd Coffey.  Just the name itself makes me want to laugh, because I just picture a chubby man waddling out to the mound ready ...(more)

Okay, we are entering July and somehow, someway, we are in contention.  I would say that this 6 game homestand is vitally important for the franchise.  I say this because I think that Walt Jocketty and Castellini are watching these games to see if we should go ahead with a trade, or whether one guy is not going to be enough to put us over the top in the central.  Really, winning the ...(more)

(First paragraph) So Edwin "I am not going to bother to spell his last name" is back at third with his .125 average, and O-4 at the plate, one strikeout and one throwing error.

(Next paragraph) I see the Reds had one error as a team yesterday and when I saw Edwin in the line up I didn't even have to look.  W

So, they were talking on the radio today about the Reds picking up Roy Halladay.  I believe that this is highly, highly unlikely, but it got me thinking about what we could offer, and what our rotation would look like with him out there.  Here is what I would give ...(more)

On the 3rd of July the Reds had the game won and Dusty let the best hitter in the game hit and what did Albert do hit a grand slam.  The reds tie the score and the next inning the pitchers let down a little but again 2 on 2 out and Pujols up again and they pitch to him and WOW what a suprise a double.  The worst thing about all of ...(more)

We had a few potentials last night.  Too bad it didn't work out.  I was pulling for EE.  Nice to see his bat come alive.

Tonight I will go with Joey Votto.  I predict a big game from Joey.

I don't care what anyone says, this is NOT the same pitcher from even 2 games ago.  I was at the Indians game last Saturday when he pitched and he was freakin' laboring through 5 innings.  I just figured he was able to squeak out a win because of all the run support and the fact the Indians sucked so bad.  Can learning a spli ...(more)

The worst defeat in 100 years doesn't mean the season is over. It should be a wake up call....it's not like this isn't a trend...there have been several bowouts lately, and it isn't luck...it's the way this team plays.

I hope the players, coaches and especially the manager Dusty Baker, GM Walt Jocketty, and owner Bob Castellini are more embarrassed than us fans are (If that is possible
