--OF Norris Hopper, on the DL most of the season with a sore right elbow that has bothered him since early May, will undergo Tommy John elbow reconstruction surgery Tuesday and is out for the season.

--RF Ken Griffey Jr. homered in the first inning, giving him 5,001 career total bases, 18th on the all-time list.

--INF Jeff Keppinger has made 42 starts at shortstop, one of five players to start at shortstop this year (Jerry Hairston Jr. 27, Paul Janish 13, Jolbert Cabrera 4, Juan Castro 2).

--2B Brandon Phillips has not made an error in 75 games and has made only one error all season while playing spectacularly.

--C Paul Bako was hitting .300 the first three weeks of the season, but is 2-for-25, dropping his recent average from .242 to .220.

BY THE NUMBERS
.244 -- Team batting average at the season's halfway point, next to last in the National League.

QUOTE TO NOTE
"We're pretty low in every hitting category and we just have to start hitting. We strike out too much, way too much (527 the first half)." -- Manager Dusty Baker, noting that no Reds player is on pace for 100 RBIs this season but six are on pace to strike out more than 100 times.

(First paragraph) So Edwin "I am not going to bother to spell his last name" is back at third with his .125 average, and O-4 at the plate, one strikeout and one throwing error.

(Next paragraph) I see the Reds had one error as a team yesterday and when I saw Edwin in the line up I didn't even have to look.  W

I have stayed off of Dusty's back this year, frankly because he hadn't done anything too idiotic to tick me off... until last night.

Explain to me a few things:

1.  The only person in our dugout who had seen last night's pitcher more than 2 or 3 times was Jonny Gomes... and he was hitting over

So, they were talking on the radio today about the Reds picking up Roy Halladay.  I believe that this is highly, highly unlikely, but it got me thinking about what we could offer, and what our rotation would look like with him out there.  Here is what I would give ...(more)

Okay, we are entering July and somehow, someway, we are in contention.  I would say that this 6 game homestand is vitally important for the franchise.  I say this because I think that Walt Jocketty and Castellini are watching these games to see if we should go ahead with a trade, or whether one guy is not going to be enough to put us over the top in the central.  Really, winning the ...(more)

Huge Reds fan here. I was born here in cincinnati, ohio in 1989 and am now 20 yrs old. my favorite toy when i was a really little kid apparently was a mr red bobble head doll (so my parents tell me). I have been a huge reds fan for as long as i can remember. Ever since I was old enough to be a real fan, i have rooted for the reds summer aft ...(more)

Scouting Report:
Reds: In his most recent start, Owings(6-8, 4.48) pitched his second consecutive solid outing, going six innings and allowing two runs in a 5-2 Reds win over the Cardinals. It was Owings' second consecutive win and his third in fou

The worst defeat in 100 years doesn't mean the season is over. It should be a wake up call....it's not like this isn't a trend...there have been several bowouts lately, and it isn't luck...it's the way this team plays.

I hope the players, coaches and especially the manager Dusty Baker, GM Walt Jocketty, and owner Bob Castellini are more embarrassed than us fans are (If that is possible

Personally I love the Reds and I love Jay Bruce but when is enough enough? Im so tired of watching every game with him just flailing at pitches. Yes he has a hose in the outfied but gee whiz his stick needs some major improvement. Hell i thought Homer looked better up the ...(more)

Scouting Report:
Reds: Bailey(1-0, 5.94) came up with arguably the best start of his career last Friday against the Cardinals. He gave up two runs and three hits over 7 1/3 innings, leaving with a 3-0 lead. Yet the bullpen couldn't hold the game for Bai

I don't care what anyone says, this is NOT the same pitcher from even 2 games ago.  I was at the Indians game last Saturday when he pitched and he was freakin' laboring through 5 innings.  I just figured he was able to squeak out a win because of all the run support and the fact the Indians sucked so bad.  Can learning a spli ...(more)

Any time I ask somebody " Do you think the Reds will make it to the playoffs?" , they automaticly say no. I am sick and tired of them saying that. They're a game over .500 and 3rd in the NL Central, and 5th in the Wild Card. They could make it to the playoffs next year or even this year.

Well, last night the correction came to our bullpen in brutal fashion, at least to everyone except Nick Masset, who only "escaped" by getting himself injured (great...).  But I am especially worried about Arthur Rhodes.  This is the second game ...(more)

Go ahead, pull the thread and let the unraveling begin.  I did not like the way the coaching staff threw in the towel last night in the 4th inning...some suggested it was the smart thing to do considering we have 13 straight games to play.  I say the staff had a chance of beating the #1 team in our division if they had yanked Arroyo with 2 on in the 4th but they chose to g ...(more)

I'm a huge Reds and Jay Bruce fan but when is enough enough? He is an excellent fielder as we all know but his stick is just not that great. Everytime he steps to the plate I feel uneasy. He flails at the ball way too much. His batting average is poor at this point and I' ...(more)
