Masset blew his second save in three days Tuesday, giving up a 2-1 lead in the eighth. The Reds came back to win 8-2 in 11 innings. But they're concerned about Masset.
Masset is 0-2 with a 10.80 ERA. He's allowed 12 base runners in six innings. Sunday, Masset entered the game against Arizona with a 7-6 lead in the eighth. He allowed four runs and took the loss as the Reds fell 10-8.
"Masset is throwing the ball (well)," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "We've got to get him out of the heart of the plate. He had a similar problem early last year."
Masset finished last April with an 11.32 ERA. He had a 2.06 ERA over his last 69 appearances.
"We've got to cut down the time for him to get his stuff together," Baker said. "We're going to need him badly. He's one of my main guys late in the ballgame."
The Reds have several relievers pitching well -- left-handers Bill Bray and Aroldis Chapman and right-hander Jordan Smith and Logan Ondrusek. They're likely to put them in the eighth inning role until Masset shows some consistency.
