Indians report: Inside pitch

Inside pitch · Roster · Notes, quotes

As the offseason begins, Indians officials are confronted with a rotation more unsettled and out of focus than at any time since the opening of Progressive Field in 1994. Indians officials have lots of names of potential starting pitchers, but also lots of question marks and almost no sure-things.

That makes the status of veteran right-hander Jake Westbrook more critical than ever. Westbrook is the only starting pitcher on the roster with an extended track record of success at the major league level.

Westbrook is also one of the Indians' most uncertain pitchers physically. The 32-year-old right-hander hasn't pitched in a major league game since May 28, 2008. He had Tommy John surgery on June 12, 2008, and his rehab has taken longer than expected.

The Indians had hoped Westbrook would be back at midseason 2009, but he had setbacks in his rehab and didn't pitch at all in 2009. Westbrook is continuing his rehab this offseason and may pitch some winter ball.

Interestingly, when asked to predict who the Indians' opening-day pitcher would be in 2010, general manager Mark Shapiro said, without hesitation, "Jake Westbrook." Given the pool of candidates, Westbrook would be the obvious choice.

But that depends on his health. If Westbrook is healthy, he would become the obvious No. 1 starter. The rest of the rotation will come from a pool of pitchers that includes Fausto Carmona, David Huff, Aaron Laffey, Justin Masterson, Jeremy Sowers, Hector Rondon and any offseason additions the team makes.

Former Indians pitcher Tim Belcher is the team’s new pitching coach, the first member of manager Manny Acta’s staff.

Belcher has spent the past eight years as a special assistant to baseball operations in the Indians organization. He was responsible for evaluating players in Cleveland’s system and scouted other teams ...(more)

There were ex-Indians scattered all over the place in the post season.  Why do the Indians let all these guys go instead of keeping them, winning, selling out the stadium and making millions?  You had that formula going like a charm in the 90s.  Wha' happened?  Doesn't the current owner want to make money?

Ok I want Grady Sizemore on my team being logical what will it take to pry him away from the Indians. Lets say that I'm a GM and am willing to make a fair offer. I have some young talent as well as some veterans, I have outfielders, infielders, and pitching. Throw out some ...(more)

I see we may see a Cliff Lee and ALCS MVP C.C. Sabathia showdown. Downright hilarious that title starved "mistake by the lake" wouldnt pony up and keep one of these guys. Another reason why its been 16,375 days since a professional sporst title or even an NBA Finals win in that city. LOL!

Ill take 0-16 any da

The Tampa Bay Rays have signed Derek Shelton as their hitting coach. Now we'll see what he's made of...

We have a good idea that Manny Acta will get the manager job since he's being pushed by the Indians and the local media, who will fill our role as hitting coach? No, n ...(more)

No, its the truth.... Washington Nationals (former) skipper who lost 103 games this year is set to meet Cleveland Indians General Manager, Mark Shapiro, for the 2010 opening managerial position. As if 97 games losses weren't enough? It was 97 games (I think). Regardless, Dolan must t ...(more)

CC Sabathia vs. Cliff Lee in Game One of the World Series......can it get any worse ?

Wait, it can, you guys have arguably the worst team in the NFL with the worst coach, and you just traded your best player to the Jets for nothing.

Then yo

Don't like it at all. I wanted Bobby V, but I'm sure it came down to us being cheap.

Well, we got our latino influence now on the team now.

My only hope is the Jon Nunnally is our hitting coach.

Thank god. I no longer have to watch this terrible excuse of a baseball team. I hope Eric Wedge and his coaches have their lockers already cleaned out, so we can hire someone who is baseball smart and will actually manage the game isn't of standing around looking stupid, in some wind breaker trash bag looking outfit, the sad news however is that 2010 will be much like this season.

Am I alone in wanting to see C.C. choke in the playoffs again?  He always tenses up and over-throws in the post-season.  NY media breathing down his neck, the expectations of living up to a contract bigger than the GDP of most third world countries.  Even Clemens had a hard time with the pressure.  I just hate the fact that the ...(more)

(POLL) Simple, who wins?

I am going Yankees in 6. I expect CC and Lee to split their starts making it 1-1. Burnett lose the first one and wins the second. two Pettitte wins both. 4-2.

There's a lot of talk regarding the next Indians manager.  Should it be a young firey guy or an established MLB veteran.  Some talk about bringing Hargrove back and some talk about staying in the system.

How about Omar Vizquel to be the first player m ...(more)

(POLL) Well the search is on.  Shapiro and Dolan said they want to have a new manager in place by the end of the World Series.  So who should it be?

Someone from within the club?
A former player?
A former manager?
Someone else?

Who do you want?
