Second base a revolving door for Tigers

Roster Report · Notes, Quotes · Second base a revolving door for Tigers

So now it's second base roulette for the Tigers.

Detroit has gone through four second basemen so far this season will be on their fifth the first time Danny Worth opens a game at the position, which will happen shortly.

Will Rhymes opened the season as Detroit's second baseman but didn't hit and was sent out with Scott Sizemore coming in return. Sizemore didn't hit much, either, and was dealt to Oakland for left-handed pitcher David Purcey, who will work out of the bullpen.

Manager Jim Leyland has tried Ryan Raburn at second in an effort to get more punch and the only player to show any offensive life at the position is Ramon Santiago, who started in Detroit's 6-3 loss to Boston. Santiago went hitless.

Raburn has defensive limitations and Santiago is best suited for short-term duty in the field.

The Tigers brought up Danny Worth, a quality infielder with offensive shortcomings, and will probably give him a look initially to see how he hits. Worth didn't burn up the world at Class AAA Toledo.

Detroit showed some offensive spark when Raburn played second earlier this year but he's struggling in the first half of a season for the third year in a row.

It's likely Leyland at this time will mix-and-match according to the opposition and the starting pitcher.
