Marlins report: Notes, quotes

Notes, quotes · Roster · Inside pitch

--SS Hanley Ramirez hit his sixth leadoff home run of the season and 21st lead-off shot of his career. He hit the first pitch of the game off Colorado RHP Greg Reynolds for his 21s home run of the season.

--2B Dan Uggla (left ankle sprain) took batting practice in an indoor cage Friday, but he might not be available to pinch hit until Sunday.

--In what could have been his final rehab start, RHP Josh Johnson showed Friday night that he's ready to pitch and hit. Johnson threw 111 pitches over eight scoreless innings for Class AA Carolina, allowing two walks and striking out seven. He also hit a home run. Johnson, who had reconstructive elbow surgery on Aug. 3, could start for the Marlins on Wednesday in San Diego.

--Marlins pitching coach Mark Wiley, a special assistant with the Rockies last year, received his 2007 National League championship ring on Thursday from Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd.

Wiley has a World Series ring from the 1983 Baltimore Orioles and two League Championship Series rings from the Cleveland Indians (1995 and 1997).

--SS Hanley Ramirez switched to a bigger bat a little more than two weeks ago, setting aside his 33 1/2-inch bat and using a 35-inch model that was first loaned to him by first baseman Mike Jacobs.

"They just felt good," said Ramirez, who has hit safely in his last 11 games and in 16 of his last 17.

Ramirez hit two home runs using Jacobs' bat then ordered his own batch of 35-inchers. Against pitchers with higher velocity, Ramirez will go back to his original bats. But he said he mostly uses the 35-inch models.

BY THE NUMBERS
0 -- Wins for LHP Scott Olsen in six June starts. It was the first winless month of his career.

QUOTE TO NOTE
"It's all about managing the symptoms. It's manageable now, so that's why I can play." -- LF Josh Willingham, on the lower back strain that kept him out of action from April 28 until Tuesday.

***Mark McGwire's Five-Step Approach To Hitting***
The Mac is back!  Big Mac, Mark McGwire is back with the Cardinals to be their hitting coach.  McGwire has always been a fan favorite in St. Louis, but it’s almost a written fact that he t

Why can't our owner just let our GM do his job? He brought Torborg with him from Montreal and didn't let him go until he had no other choice. Then, after McKeon "retires", he goes against his GM's decision and hires the popular choice in Joe Girardi and waits until the guy refuses to attend his parties, curses him, and injures the entire pitching staff ...(more)

I dont have many things to say about the Marlins. However about the time winding down and the hopes getting shorter. Now we have to go on a respected streak almost undeafeated if we want to gurantee a spot. Do you believe that Dan Uggla,Cody Ross, ...(more)

I hope your team isn't going on vacation, there are three critical games with Atlanta starting today, and all of us in Colorado will be rooting for you guys.  We hope you win a couple of them.  Good luck!

If the Marlins really want to make a run for the playoffs, as of NOW they are 80-70; we need to win atleast 10 more games to make it in the post-season. A 90-72 record is a great improvement for a run in the playoffs. They might most probably end up in 87 wins; best case scenario. We need more weapons and inspiration next season to make a m ...(more)

Okay first off why the hell is this guy still closing games for us. He gives up way to many homeruns and he blew another game today giving up 2 homeruns in the bottom of the 9th. I cant watch games anymore when the bum comes in and blows games. I mean Lidstrom is not that bad. Put Meyer in as closer and things will be good. Because he is starting to pitch like ...(more)

MIAMI -- For more than a month, Ricky Nolasco found himself in a nice groove. From the start on Wednesday, the 26-year-old found himself in trouble.

Nolasco surrendered a career-high 10 runs in 3 1/3 innings, and the Marlins' five-game winning streak was snapped ...(more)

I said it befor and I will say it again we cant afford to lose games to the Nats. Big lose tonight when everyone ahead of us lost in the wildcard. If we lose 2 outta 3 to the Nats kiss the season goodbye.

The Marlins have let go of RP Luis Ayala ... and thank G-D they did. Technically Ayala opted to become a free agent but still.... To say Ayala was an inconsistent pitcher would be the understatment of the century. He was 1-5 with an ERA of 5.6 in 40 innings with the team. He blew tons of saves and spent too much time in the minors. When we ...(more)

About 2 weeks ago the Marlins were 2 games out. Now we are about to go 5 games out of the Wild Card and 9.5 of the division. This is sad. Why is Renyel Pinto still trusted by our horrible manager. Everytime Pinto goes to the mound he is everywhere.

Because we just swept the Phillies! The depressing part is, however, that we were swept by the Nationals (which, alone is embarrassing) while the Phillies were finally losing games, to the Cardinals. Instead of being 4 or 5 ga ...(more)

We took game 1 from the Mets, we have 2 more vs them then San Diego and Atlanta coming up anything less than 7-2 in these upcoming games and you can pretty much count us out. We may have to worry about LA and SF and ATL because at this rate Colorado may win that division. We need our pitching to step up if we want any chance at the WC.  ...(more)
