Eliminating Buente, Marlins open Johnson's rotation spot again

Eliminating Buente, Marlins open Johnson's rotation spot again · Notes, Quotes · Roster Report

Jay Buente's tenure as Josh Johnson's replacement didn't last very long. Buente was designated for assignment Tuesday and replaced on the roster by reliever Steve Cishek.

Burke Badenhop, a long reliever, is one candidate to make Johnson's next start, Saturday at Dodger Stadium. But it will depend on Johnson's progress this week.

Johnson, on the disabled list due to right shoulder inflammation, hopes to play catch Wednesday in what would be his first activity since he threw a painful bullpen session last Thursday that landed him on the disabled list a day later. The move was backdated to May 17.

If Johnson progresses well this week, the Marlins will be encouraged that he can come off the DL and start June 1. That would mean they'd need a starter just for Saturday.

If he has a setback, the team could find a starter in the minor leagues to take at least two of Johnson's rotation turns.

Buente allowed three runs in three innings Sunday. After the game, the Marlins indicated he'd get at least one more start, but they changed their minds Tuesday. One reason is that Sunday is a day game, so the team doesn't want to risk the chance of overusing the bullpen Saturday night and Sunday afternoon.

Cishek, 24, was 1-1 with a 2.35 ERA in 15 appearances for Class AAA New Orleans. He threw a total of 4 1/3 scoreless innings for Florida in three appearances last season.
