Notes, Quotes
--Manager Edwin Rodriguez said Monday the team may have to call up a pitcher from the minor leagues to start June 7. The Marlins were hoping RHP Josh Johnson could be come off the disabled list by then, but that doesn't look as if it's going to happen.
Johnson is eligible to return Wednesday, but he said the right shoulder inflammation that has kept him out since May 17 hasn't improved enough.
"It doesn't hurt, but it doesn't feel great. I'll wait until its 100 percent," Johnson said Monday, adding that he doesn't know when he'll be able to throw a bullpen session. "There's no point in try to air it out if it doesn't feel 100 percent. It's definitely getting better."
--CF Chris Coghlan was dropped to eighth in the batting order Monday against Arizona LHP Joe Saunders and went 0-for-4. SS Emilio Bonifacio hit first, and 2B Omar Infante, who had been hitting eighth lately, batted second. Coghlan struck out three times Sunday against Dodgers LHP Clayton Kershaw.
"(Sunday) I felt good. I have struck out three times in many games, but honestly I felt very good and consistent with my approach," said Coghlan, who is batting .119 (7-for-59) against lefties.
Manager Edwin Rodriguez indicated Coghlan would move back to the leadoff spot, perhaps as early as Tuesday.
--RHP Javier Vazquez was called on to pinch-hit Monday night. He struck out to end the sixth inning. He's 0-for-3 with a walk in his career as a pinch hitter. "He looked pretty good. He battled," manager Edwin Rodriguez said with a smile.
--SS Emilio Bonifacio and 2B Omar Infante, batting Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, combined to go 5-for-8 with two walks. They started off the first and third innings with back-to-back singles.
--OF Scott Cousins was limping in the clubhouse before Monday's game because of a sore right ankle. He fouled a ball off his ankle Sunday in Los Angeles. Although Cousins said his ankle was about 80 percent, he said he was available, though he didn't get into the game.
BY THE NUMBERS
3 1/3 -- Innings pitched by RHP Chris Volstad on Monday, his shortest start of the season. He allowed five runs on nine hits in the Marlins' 15-4 loss to the Diamondbacks. It was the most runs allowed by the Marlins since May 22, 2009, against Tampa Bay.
QUOTE TO NOTE
"Hanley is struggling, Josh Johnson is on the DL, and we're still playing the way we're playing. There's some negative news, but at the same time, we have to see it as a positive." -- Manager Edwin Rodriguez, referring to Florida's 30-21 record before Monday's loss.
