Third baseman Mike Aviles ended the last homestand hitless in his final 15 at-bats. He started the trip on the bench.
Manager Ned Yost benched Aviles in the Friday 5-2 loss at Detroit and replaced him with Wilson Betemit at third base.
"Everybody goes through rough weeks," Yost said. "You have to allow them at times to play through it. If you've got other options, you mix in other options. We've got Betemit, too, who is going to mix in.
"So it's not like we're tied solely to one player at that position. We'll keep mixing both in and see what happens."
Aviles is hitting a puny .115, 3-for-26, and also committed three errors in four starts at third base. He could have been charged with a couple of more. He made one start at second base.
Betemit went 1-for-4 and struck out twice. Betemit hit .297 with 13 home runs in 84 games last season.
