--3B Mike Aviles snapped a 0-for-18 skid with two doubles and three RBI Wednesday against the Twins. That was the worst hitless streak in Aviles' career. He batted .304 in 110 games last season.
--RHP Jeremy Jeffress picked up his first big league safe Wednesday. He worked two scoreless innings against the Twins and gave up one hit and struck out one. He was one of the four players the Royals acquired from the Brewers in the Zack Greinke trade in December.
--RHP Kyle Davies picked up the victory Wednesday, but his ERA remained at 9.00. Davies allowed five runs on 10 hits and a walk in five innings, while striking out four. He gave up four runs in the fifth as the Twins cut a 6-1 Kansas City lead to 6-5.
--Manager Ned Yost said he would use rookie RHPs Jeremy Jeffress and Aaron Crow, and rookie LHP Tim Collins, plus second-year RHP Kanekoa Texeira in close games in late innings. RHP Robinson Tejeda has been removed from the primary setup role after giving up a run on three hits and a walk, the only batters he faced, in a 10-inning loss Tuesday at Minnesota.
--OF Brett Eibner is expected to be out 8-to-12 weeks after tearing a left thumb ligament while diving to make a catch for Class A Kane County in the Midwest League. Eibner is a highly-touted prospect who was drafted in the second round last June out of Arkansas. He hit a home run in his first pro at-bat.
BY THE NUMBERS
.346 -- LF Alex Gordon's batting average after getting two more hits Wednesday at Minnesota.
QUOTE TO NOTE
"Eighteen at-bats in the course of 500 to 600 at-bats? It's really just a little down period. It's really not that big of a deal." -- 3B Mike Aviles, who snapped a 0-for-18 skid with two doubles Wednesday.
