Chen led the Royals with 12 victories in 2010 and was seeking a multi-year deal, but received none. Still, when the Royals signed free-agent left-hander Jeff Francis, it looked like even less of a need for Chen.
The Royals re-signed Chen to a one-year contract and he started the season as the No. 4 starter, but the 33-year-old from Panama is pitching like an ace.
Chen worked seven innings Tuesday night to pick up a 5-3 decision over the Indians. Chen is 7-0 in his past 11 starts since his last loss on Aug. 23. He is 3-0 with a 2.42 in four starts this season.
Chen's streak of 20 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run ended in the seventh when Lou Marson stroked a two-run double with two outs. Chen has allowed 23 hits, while striking out 16 and walking seven in 26 innings.
Since he started his seven-game winning streak on Aug. 29, the only pitchers with at least seven victories and no defeats in that span are Dan Haren of the Angels (7-0) and Carlos Zambrano of the Cubs (8-0).
