Slumping Gordon gets a breather

Alex Gordon did not get the night off Wednesday, but the slumping left fielder was held out of the Royals' starting lineup.

Gordon's foul popup as a pinch hitter ended the eighth inning before the Royals rallied for a 4-3 victory in 11 innings over the Yankees.

Gordon is just 5-for-32 (.156) in May, dropping his average to .298. He was also 2-for-15 against Yankees starter A.J. Burnett, so manager Ned Yost decided it was time to rest Gordon.

Gordon was hitting .356 on April 25, but that average has tumbled. After ending April with back-to-back multi-hit games, he has only two extra-base hits and four RBI in his nine May games.

Yost said Gordon would be back in the starting lineup Thursday for the series finale at Yankee Stadium. The two teams split the first two games of the series, with the Royals snapping a seven-game road losing skid Wednesday.
