Roster Report · Notes, Quotes · Royals give rotation a youthful injection

--LHP Jeff Francis pitched 7 2/3 scoreless innings to pick up his first victory as a Royal in his 10th start Friday in a 3-0 win over the Cardinals. It was his first victory since July 30, while with the Rockies against the Cubs. He improved to 5-1 lifetime against the Cardinals.

--DH Billy Butler singled to lead off the seventh, igniting a three-run rally in the Royals' 3-0 victory over the Cardinals. It extended Butler's franchise record to hitting safely in 119 consecutive series. Only Orioles RF Nick Markakis (154) has a longer active streak in the majors.

--RHP Greg Holland on Thursday became the fourth Royals pitcher to claim his first big-league victory this season. The others are RHPs Nate Adcock and Aaron Crow and LHP Tim Collins.

--LHP John Lamb, one of the Royals' top pitching prospects, went on the disabled list for Class AA Northwest Arkansas. He threw just seven pitches in a Thursday start against Tulsa before exiting with a sore elbow. He is being examined with no word yet on the extent of his injury. Lamb, 20, is 1-2 with a 3.09 ERA in eight starts this season.

--RHP Jeremy Jeffress, who was optioned Thursday to Class AAA Omaha, will start Saturday for the Storm Chasers. Jeffress made 14 relief appearances with Kansas City before the demotion. He also made 10 big-league appearances last year, all out of the bullpen, with Milwaukee.

BY THE NUMBERS
14 -- Hits, all singles, by the Royals' in their 2-1, 10-inning victory Thursday over the Rangers. The last time the Royals had a higher hit total without an extra-base hit was Aug. 31, 2004, when they collected 17 singles in a 9-8 decision over the Tigers.

QUOTE TO NOTE
"He's improved on his secondary pitches. He's always had the good sinker, but his changeup has gotten better, and we've developed a better curveball for him. The intangible that he has is when he steps on the mound, he competes. He's not nervous." -- Manager Ned Yost, on RHP Nate Adcock, who makes his first major league start Saturday against the Cardinals.
