Russell Martin has been a new man ever since the catcher's All-Star break came a little early.

Manager Joe Torre sat a struggling Martin for two consecutive starts (June 30 and July 1) before a team day off, giving the NL's games-played leader at catcher the past two seasons a rare extended break. Martin caught in 294 games in 2007 and 2008.

Since his extended time off, Martin is batting .346 in seven July games.

After hitting .190 in June, Martin started July with a .246 overall average, but it had been as low as .238 last month. He is now sitting on a .255 batting average heading into a three-game weekend series at Milwaukee.

The Dodgers certainly have no complaints about Martin's defense. The 2007 NL Gold Glove Award winner has just two errors in 593 total chances, good for a .997 fielding percentage. He has also guided Dodgers pitchers to a 3.38 ERA when he has been behind the plate.

"It's my most important job to handle the pitching staff," Martin said. "That's going to help a team win. If the pitching does well, the team's going to do well. Nowadays it seems like everybody has a catcher who can hit, but the main focus of a catcher has always been to help the pitchers do as good a job as they can possibly do."

An All-Star the past two seasons, Martin will instead get another three-day break next week, and there's no telling what another lengthy rest will do.

DODGERS 11, METS 2: All-Star Orlando Hudson drove in three runs on a bases-clearing double in the first inning, while Manny Ramirez, Russell Martin and Juan Castro had two RBIs each in the Dodgers' rout. In six games since returning from a 50-game suspension, one of which he didn't even start, Ramirez has seven RBIs. Randy Wolf gave up two runs over 6 1/3 innings to win for the first time since May 28.

I've seen a ton of talk lately with pepole calling Dodger fans at large "hypocrites" due to Manny's return. Fine. We booed Barry and now we cheer Manny. There is no getting around that fact. Although I think the main reason we booed Barry was that he was the best Giant and we hate the Giants, the truth is the truth. Steroid use ...(more)

If I remember correctly, the team with the best record last year at the A-S break was the Tampa Bay Rays. And they were poorly represented in the All-Star game.  This year, it's the Dodgers as the best team and again, poorly represented. The fan-voting thing is stupid in my opinio ...(more)

Is it just me, or have you noticed that the guys don't seem to be enjoying Manny since his return??  Everyone looks so serious in dugout.  Remember last year, when everyone was smiling and joking in the dugout with Manny??  Maybe the guys aren't so happy that
Pierre has been benched or they feel letdown by Manny's 50 game suspension but say otherwise.  We need good karma f

A recent offensive swoon has dropped the Milwaukee Brewers from first place in the NL Central, and keeping up with the high-powered Los Angeles Dodgers this weekend may be difficult.

It could be even tougher Friday night, with All-Star ...(more)

Not many things gaul my as much as seeing Andruw Jones crank dongs this year for the Texas Rangers. After his stunt, er, stint in LA last year and some $25 million and change leaving our pockets for this sack of garbage, it was more palatable thinking we'd signed a washed up ...(more)

No its not cause the Mets are a decent team lol.

1. Kershaw  had a great game on the road where he isn't that effective.

2.  Claudio Vargas showed he could pitch - even though it was one inning

3. McDonald was effective as w

Juan Pierre has been coming in the middle of games since the return of Manny Ramirez. With Ramirez, Kemp, Ethier, and Pierre all legit, should we not play Pierre a little more and sit Kemp and Eithier a game every other series? Pierre is swinging a hot bat, and ...(more)

Orlando Hudson hasn't had the best luck lately.

Already in the midst of his worst slump as a Dodger, the hard-nosed second baseman took a Brian Stokes pitch on the left knee leading off the seventh inning and had to leave Thursday night's game at Citi Field, ...(more)

Hey everyone...haven't posted in a while, I've been busy enjoying the Blue destroying everything in their path.

Just wanted to get everyones opinion on what we would have to sacrifice for Roy Halladay.  The guy is a sure-thing ace, and would REALLY boost the rotation, giving us a devastating 1-2 of Halladay, Bill

(POLL) As Manny is set to return this week, who will hit the bench?  It's probably a toss up between Andre Ethier and Juan Pierre (.329 average), but both offer an offensive component that is key to our team.  Pierre has truly turned into a great leadoff hitt ...(more)

Andre Ethier beats the Rockies last night with a walk-off HR. This is just days after hitting three out against the Mariners. I'd say he's found his power stroke.
Ethier had been struggling a bit at the plate.

We have the best record in baseball and we need to the have the most All Stars at the All Star game, we all need to go on and vote for Matty Kemp, get Kemp to the ASG!!!!

Iam disspointed in a few things regarding the ASG.

The Dodgers have won 52 games and there are 6 more before the break.  What if they won the next 6 (purely hopeful on my part)... but that would put them at 58.  The record for the most wins in a single season is 116 by the 2001 Mariners and 1906 Cubs.  With Ma ...(more)
