Dodgers report: Inside pitch

Inside pitch · Roster · Notes, quotes

General manager Ned Colletti said Friday that he probably will have to be more flexible in which players he is willing to trade as this year's trading deadline nears. Although he didn't mention any player by name, that almost certainly means the once untouchable Matt Kemp is available if the right deal comes along.

"We're more open-minded to what we may have to move than we have been in the past," Colletti said, adding that it likely will be something more than a one-for-one trade.

Although Colletti has never publicly identified any player as one he would be unwilling to trade, that list was always widely believed to include Kemp, catcher Russell Martin, pitcher Clayton Kershaw and perhaps pitcher Chad Billingsley.

Martin, a candidate to play in his second consecutive All-Star Game, probably remains immovable, as does Kershaw, still the Dodgers' top pitching prospect despite being optioned back to Double-A Jacksonville on Wednesday. And Billingsley, who preceded Kershaw as the club's top pitching prospect, is just now beginning to blossom into the dominating starter team officials always figured he would be.

That leaves Kemp, who is something of an enigma even as he is tied for the team lead with 44 RBI, has a .336 on-base percentage and seems to have found a temporary home in the leadoff spot. Three seasons into his still-budding career, Kemp is still a potential superstar and is still coveted by a host of other clubs, and trading him potentially could net the Dodgers a nice package of players.

DODGERS 10, GIANTS 7: The Dodgers banged out seven doubles, got home runs from Andre Ethier and Andy LaRoche and got a huge lift from lefty reliever Hong-Chih Kuo, who gave them two perfect innings with three strikeouts after Derek Lowe went only five innings Friday. Ethier went 3 for 6 with a single, double and triple and has now homered in three consecutive games and four of his past eight.
