--2B Rickie Weeks became the first Brewers player to lead off a season with a home run when he socked a 2-2 pitch from Cincinnati RHP Edinson Volquez out to left-center. Weeks hit eight leadoff home runs in 2010, establishing a franchise record.
--CF Carlos Gomez followed 2B Rickie Weeks' leadoff home run with an upper-deck shot off RHP Edinson Volquez, making the Brewers the first team to have the first two hitters of a season sock home runs since the 1969 Reds. Pete Rose and Bobby Tolan led off that season with homers against the Dodgers' Don Drysdale.
--C Wil Nieves got the Opening Day start behind the plate in Cincinnati. Nieves figures to see a bit more action than C George Kottaras as the Brewers wait for No. 1 C Jonathan Lucroy to recover from a broken finger. Manager Ron Roenicke said he planned to start Kottaras in the third game of the opening series against the Reds.
--The Brewers had four players make their first major league Opening Day roster: RHP John Axford, LHP Zach Braddock, RHP Brandon Kintzler and INF/OF Erick Almonte. Axford, Braddock and Kintzler all pitched for the Brewers in 2010 after the season began.
--RHP Kameron Loe surrendered a seventh-inning home run to Reds 1B Joey Votto in the season opener but otherwise was dominant, striking out the other three hitters he faced. Loe figures to be used as a late-inning setup man after a big 2010 season and an impressive spring training.
BY THE NUMBERS
11 -- New players on the Brewers' roster from Opening Day of last season.
QUOTE TO NOTE
"I'll reflect on it a little bit. I'll check some video (Friday) and be ready to go Saturday, let it go. It's a long year. We've got 161 games left. I'm pretty sure I'll be all right." -- RHP John Axford, after surrendering four runs in the bottom of the ninth as the Reds rallied for a 7-6 victory on Opening Day.
