This week, the starters got an extra day off thanks to Mother Nature. A rainout Tuesday night in Pittsburgh prompted manager Ron Roenicke and pitching coach Rick Kranitz to push all of the starters back.
Shaun Marcum, who would have started Tuesday, fired seven shutout innings Wednesday in the Brewers 6-0 rout of the Pirates. He allowed four hits and one walk while striking out four.
Randy Wolf will pitch the series finale at Pittsburgh on Thursday. Chris Narveson and Yovani Gallardo will pitch the first two games of the weekend series in Washington, before fifth starter Marco Estrada finally makes his second start of the year in the finale against the Nationals.
"Rick has always told me that early in the season he likes the off days because it allows guys to pitch on that sixth day," Roenicke said. "He thinks it's a good idea for everybody to do that. In our case, we weren't doing that because we only had four starters (with Greinke out).
"Now, it's working out better to have that fifth guy with Estrada and allow the other guys to bump back an extra day."
Because the Brewers have an off day after the current three-city trip, Gallardo will get an extra day before his following start as well.
