Twins report: Notes, quotes

Notes, quotes · Inside pitch · Roster

--2B Alexi Casilla was in manager Ron Gardenhire's original lineup on Sunday morning, but when the rookie didn't show up for the 1 p.m. game against Detroit until a few minutes before 11 a.m. -- when the team was supposed to begin hitting in the batting cages -- Gardenhire scratched Casilla and put Luis Rodriguez at second base. Casilla told Gardenhire that his cell phone, which he uses as an alarm clock, did not go off to wake him.

--LHP Johan Santana's loss on Saturday put the two-time Cy Young winner's record at 15-12 for the season, making him the third Twins pitcher to lose at least 12 games this year. The last time Minnesota had three or more pitches with 12 or more losses was in 1998, when LaTroy Hawkins, Eric Milton and Brad Radke each lost 14 times and Bob Tewksbury lost 13 times.

--The Twins were mathematically eliminated from the American League Central Division race with Saturday's loss against Detroit. They are now 14-1/2 games back of Cleveland with 13 games to play and, entering Sunday's games, 12 back of AL wild-card leader New York.

--When RHP Scott Baker gave up a leadoff home run to Curtis Granderson to start off Sunday's game, it was the first homer Baker had given up in 30 1/3 consecutive innings pitched, dating back to Aug. 21.

--The Twins have now dropped seven straight games to the Tigers, seven straight games at home and been swept eight times this season. Prior to Sunday, Minnesota had not lost seven straight to Detroit since 1981.

BY THE NUMBERS
7 -- Number of Twins hitters who have ever collected 100 RBIs in two different seasons. Justin Morneau and Torii Hunter both joined that club, headed by Harmon Killebrew's eight seasons, last week.

QUOTE TO NOTE
"The defeats are getting a little bit tougher to take, and the wins aren't as much fun." -- General manager Terry Ryan, explaining his decision to step down after 13 seasons leading the Twins.
