Mets report: Inside pitch

Shawn Green knew in spring training that the odds of the Mets picking up his $10-million option for 2008 was slim.

At worst, the Mets will give him a $2 million buyout.

"I'm up in the air," Green, 34, said about his long-term future.

For the short-term, he figures to spend a lot of time on the bench as manager Willie Randolph said Lastings Milledge will get more playing time, even against right-handed pitching.

Green is hitting .274, but with an unsatisfactory eight homers and 36 RBI, which is disappointingly low for a run-producing position.

With the Mets entertaining the thought of activating outfielder Endy Chavez from the disabled list before the rosters expand on Sept. 1, it is not out of the question that Green could be designated for assignment.

METS 5, DODGERS 2: Oliver Perez threw 23 pitches in the first inning, but pulled it together to pitch seven scoreless innings and give up just three hits against Los Angeles.

In his previous four starts this month, Perez had given up 18 runs in 21 2/3 innings.

INSIDE EDGE
There is no compelling reason to activate OF Endy Chavez from the disabled list (hamstring) before the Sept. 1 call-up date, but the Mets are saying that is possible. Adding a left-handed hitting outfielder could mean subtracting a left-handed hitting outfielder, possibly Shawn Green.

The Mets have to hold on to the prospects unless to means getting Roy Halliday.

The 2011 Mets infield should be

1B-Ike Davis
2B-Reese Havens
3B-David Wright
SS-Jose Reyes

Havens is hitting .391 with 2 doubles, 1 triple, and 1 HR in the AFL.

In an article it mentions that a source close to Holliday has the Yankees as his first choice and the Mets as his second, with reservations of spacious Citi Field.

Not paranoid, just quizical.  5 or 6 weeks ago, I proposed the thought that despite the Madoff thing that the Mets would be spenders in the offseason.  My rational was that in a bad economy smart people pick up bargains and with last years disaster and the number of empty seats at seasons end the Mets needed to protect their bigge ...(more)

Ken Rosenthal of FOXsports reports that the Mets have hired Dave Jauss as bench coach over Eric Wedge or Bob Melvin. Jauss has never managed in the majors, and will be considered far less of a threat to Manuel than other candidates would have been.

Dave Jauss went to college at Amherst where he was a teammate of D

Time to split the core trade Reyes while he is still a high value.  Deal with Washington they need a drawing card. in return Elija Dukes alot of potential, speed, power, good defence,  and young. C. Guzman a SS great speed, good contact hitter, better defence at SS than Reyes, with some pop as well. Throw in a young pitcher or two in return as well ,maybe Zimmerman. Time for& ...(more)

As we can all agree, the Mets have fallen dramatically over the past few seasons, a thought I didn't think I'd have after just coming up shy against the Cardinals in the NLCS. We were prime and ready to build a team that would contend for years to come. The pieces were in place. ...(more)

The Big Apple’s other team has descended back into the depths of mediocrity the past two years. There has not been a word about the team going into rebuilding mode, but Beltran, arguably the best defensive center fielder in the game the last few years, has $18.5 million left on each of his remaining two years in 2010 and ’11. He also has a full no-trade clause.

I know this was a foregone conclusion, but IMHO, this was a terrific hire. Backman will bring energy, grit and a work ethic to an organization that lacks all of that.

If Wally can avoid going Bernazard, he may even be in line to replace Manuel if he gets off to a slow start. At worst, he manages a year and moves up to AA or AAA or even as a coach on the big league team.
