MEDICAL WATCH:

RHP Duaner Sanchez (bruised left knee) was hit by a line drive on July 1 and might not pitch again until July 4.

2B Luis Castillo (sore left thigh) missed the July 1-2 games and was placed on the disabled list July 3.

OF Trot Nixon (strained left groin) went on the 15-day disabled list June 29.

LF Moises Alou (strained left calf) went on the 15-day disabled list May 22. He was activated June 10 but left that day's game with stiffness in the calf. He went back on the DL retroactive to June 11. He began a rehab assignment in the rookie-level Gulf Coast League on July 1, but rain then kept him off the field and his return to the Mets was still up in the air.

RHP Matt Wise (right shoulder weakness) went on the 15-day disabled list May 27. The Mets had no timetable for his return as of mid-June.

LF Angel Pagan (tightness in left shoulder) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to May 12. He was at the club's spring training complex in Port St. Lucie, Fla., in mid-June, but he couldn't hit from the right side and hadn't been cleared to play in games.

LHP Jason Vargas (hip) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 21, and he had surgery March 24. As of mid-June, he was rehabbing at the club's spring training complex in Port St. Lucie, Fla. The Mets had no timetable for his return.

RHP Orlando Hernandez (right foot surgery in October 2007) opened the season on the 15-day disabled list. He began a rehab assignment with Class A St. Lucie on April 3, but he was shut down indefinitely on April 8. As of late June, he was throwing off a mound in Florida, but the Mets still had no timetable for his return.

RHP Ambiorix Burgos (Tommy John surgery in August 2007) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 21. He likely will miss the entire season.

While we all knew that this was an eventuality (given the $9.1 million dollar price tag), Adam Rubin reported today that the Mets have officially declined Putz's option. Hats off to Omar on this one. Maybe he should have listened to those of us out there that wanted Houston Street instead.

We gave up

I'm a Mets fan. Let's start there.

I want many things for this ballclub especially this off-season, but have a feeling that we aren't going to see much more than moderate signings for the team going into opening day 2010.  Instead I do see them making some mid-season moves during the trading deadline since there are lot

I am as passionate about the Mets as the next guy, but we have to really start thinking realistically!
Sometimes it's tough to read some of the threads on this board because there are a lot of dreamers out there that come up with crazy ideas, potential line-ups for 2010, trades, etc. Most of which will never be.

My question is why hasn't David Wright been stated as on the trading blocks. I know he has been the healthiest of the three major fielders, but with his decline in power (steroids not being used anymore?) and his increase in strikeouts doesn't make sense to me. Mind you I love the guy and think he is a stud, but wouldn't we be ...(more)

Aight so the offseason begins and honestly all the SP is in our division. + our division might be the most competitive in the MLB next year. But what SP staff do u think has the edge?
PHILLY
1. C Lee [ there for a full year now]
2. C Hamels[can he bounce back to Ace form?]
3. J Blanton

It started with an off-season watching the Yankee$ overspend for 3 free-agents. Each one received 30-40 more than FMV and that was done(IMHO, smartly) to blow the other teams out-of-the-water and kill any fair negotiation. The Yankee$ went for the throat and won big-time. IMHO, baseball and it's salary structure lost.

Then came the joke known as the WBC. Is there any d

I was flipping through the channels surfing for the various college games tonight, when I happened on the MLB Network and their presentation of the AFL All-star game. The Big Apple’s other team has descended back into the depths of mediocrity the past two years. There has not been a word about the team going into rebuilding mode, but Beltran, arguably the best defensive center fielder in the game the last few years, has $18.5 million left on each of his remaining two years in 2010 and ’11. He also has a full no-trade clause.

Interesting deal, if nothing else.  J.J. Hardy might have been a great low risk / high reward guy to replace Luis Castillo if one of the other GM's in baseball acquired his contract in a cocaine-fueled fit of recklessness.  Not sure if there was an oppo ...(more)
