The Mets have two vacancies to fill in the rotation, behind Johan Santana, Mike Pelfrey and John Maine. They also have vacancies at closer and left field.

BIGGEST NEEDS: The Mets' bullpen blew 29 saves in 2008, and a revamping of the bullpen is in order. Not only is the team without a closer, the focal points of the 2006 run to the NLCS championship, setup men Aaron Heilman and Duaner Sanchez, both had underwhelming seasons this year that contributed to the team's inability to hold a 3 1/2-game division lead with 17 games to play.

FREE AGENTS: LF Moises Alou, LF Marlon Anderson, RHP Luis Ayala, OF Endy Chavez, 2B Damion Easley, RHP Orlando Hernandez, RHP Pedro Martinez, 2B Ramon Martinez, LHP Oliver Perez, LHP Ricardo Rincon, OF Fernando Tatis, RHP Matt Wise.

Hernandez might be forced into retirement by a bunion that was surgically removed from his right big toe, while Alou's injury-plagued career could be over. Perez, represented by Scott Boras, will command a four- to five-year deal. Martinez has resolved to pitch in 2009, but it might have to be elsewhere. Chavez is a valuable defensive replacement, but his role diminished once Jerry Manuel succeeded Willie Randolph as manager. Easley was productive, but he turns 39 on Nov. 11 and has been susceptible to injury. Anderson had a poor season in a pinch-hitting role.

ARBITRATION-ELIGIBLE: RF Ryan Church, LHP Pedro Feliciano, RHP Aaron Heilman, RHP Duaner Sanchez, RHP John Maine, OF Angel Pagan.

With the Mets' bullpen slated for a massive overhaul this winter, Heilman and Sanchez both might get dealt.

IN LIMBO: 2B Luis Castillo, with three years and $18 million left on his contract, nonetheless will be shopped this winter, with the Mets forced to eat a large percentage of the contract. LHP Scott Schoeneweis also will be on the trading block, as he was during spring training.

MEDICAL WATCH:

LHP Billy Wagner is expected to miss the 2009 season following Tommy John surgery.

RHP John Maine underwent surgery Sept. 30 to shave a bony growth behind his right shoulder that was irritating a muscle. He's expected to begin long-tossing in late December and should be on a regular schedule in spring training.

I do not know about everyone else and I am sure you will agree, but I cannot watch our beloved Mets, as banged up as they may be, not show up to the ballpark and get blown out.  At least try to score runs.  They just look clueless out there.  Someone besides Santana and KRod needs to pitch decent.  Parnell was good until ...(more)

After losing 8-0 and almost letting the next game slip away, the Mets held on.  We are playing the Dodgers and they are pretty good.  We could have folded the tents and gone home.  I am not going to get involved with facts and figures this time, I am just happy we w ...(more)

I know a lot of people are bashing on Minaya now. Some are certainly justified and some I think are either overstated or just plain short-sighted. One of the lightening rods from this off season was that we didn't sign Hudson - he went with Cora instead. Although most people thought (and still continue to think) that was a mistake, there were a few trumpeting bringing in a guy who could play both ...(more)

So Manuel has Fernando Tatis playing 1B tonight!?!?!

There is no greater Tatis lover out there than I, but I have to question why he isn't relegated solely to a pinch hitting role.  His bat is inconsistent, he had DP-itis for awhile and he just isn't hitting.

The following is addressing the current GM of the Mets and my feelings about this team and his leadership. I am so utterly disgusted, I
need to say this and not have it in dribs and drabs over this terrific Mets site. It's obvious from my posts in virtually every thread, that I believe Omar must go if this team comes up short.  ...(more)

By no surprise, I'm talking about the Mets offense.  22 consecutive scoreless innings, that's almost 2.5 games without scoring a single run.  Can someone say "pathetic".  During those 22 innings, the mets have managed 10 hits, all singles.

During this 4 game losing streak, the Mets have hit. 183 an

That's the state of this offense. The Phillies pitchers look like Cy Young winners against this line-up. 2 losses, 3 runs and only Santana spares them another humiliating sweep. 39-40, 3 back and in 4th place. Offensive.

I'm going to give you 22 reasons. I'll start by simply receiting last night's Philies-Reds score, which happened to be 22-1.

(1)The Phillies scored 22 runs against a team who was sending to the mound a guy with the 3rd lowest ERA in baseball.
