--1B Ike Davis wasn't on the Mets' Opening Day roster last year, beginning the season in Class AAA Buffalo. But he not only is the starting first baseman from day one this year, but he delivered his first home run Sunday. Davis hit 19 last year and said he'd be happy to up the number to 20 this year.
--OF Luca Duda earned a roster spot out of camp thanks to Jason Bay's ribcage muscle strain. He not only got his first career start in right field Sunday, but he also was awarded the John J. Murphy Award as the Mets' best rookie in his first major league camp.
--RHP Chris Young will get the start in Philadelphia Tuesday to start off a three-game series against the Phillies. Young started just four games last year for the Padres while recovering from shoulder surgery.
--RHP Blaine Boyer earned his first save as a Met on Saturday in the team's first win of the season. Boyer wasn't expected to be in that situation, but Francisco Rodriguez blew the save opportunity, and when the game went into a 10th inning, Boyer took over. Boyer earned the last roster spot this spring, getting a bullpen job when the Mets elected to leave RHP Jason Isringhausen at an extended spring training.
--OF Willie Harris wasn't convinced he'd get a roster spot until he finally got the word in the final days of spring training. But once he made it, Harris, the long-time Mets thorn in the side with a history of sensational catches and big hits, has begun to endear himself. He had the team's first hit in the season opener, then a two-run double in the 10th inning in the second game and a home run in the third game.
BY THE NUMBERS
2 -- The Mets won two of three in the opening series of the season against the Florida Marlins, giving them a road series victory. The Mets didn't win a road series until June last season -- and they were 1-8 against the Marlins on the road last year.
QUOTE TO NOTE
"It's obviously a very, very good team. I think it's a challenge. I don't think either team is out to necessarily prove anything this early in the season, but it would be nice to go in there and win a series. Going in there it's obviously a hostile environment. They have put together a great team. It'll be a good challenge for us." -- 3B David Wright, on facing the Phillies.
