Mets don't like Ike's lack of progress

Roster Report · Notes, Quotes · Mets don't like Ike's lack of progress

The Mets have been through this too many times to count in recent years and, specifically, they have seen the uncertainty of a bone bruise.

So when first baseman Ike Davis found himself stalled in his efforts to come back from a sprained left ankle because of a bone bruise in the ankle joint, the team decided to check him out once again.

Davis went on the disabled list May 11 -- after insisting that he could have played the next morning. But his time on the disabled list has already gone beyond the 15-day requirement and he still was seeing no progress -- he was unable to run.

The Mets cut short the rehabilitation work in Florida and brought Davis back to New York to conduct an MRI on the ankle Sunday.

"They just decided they want to take a look and get a re-evaluation," said manager Terry Collins, who refused to term it a "setback" even though the Mets clearly are concerned about his lack of progress.

"I think it's because it's taken as much time as it has. He's got a bone bruise, and it's like everyone's told me: There's no guarantees on how long it's going to take before it starts to heal. I'm glad he's coming up and having the doctors take another look at it. If everything's on target, if we're still moving forward, then I'm glad we had him re-evaluated."

Before the injury, Davis was hitting .302 with 25 RBI in 36 games.
