Yankees report: Notes, quotes

Notes, quotes · Roster · Inside pitch

--RHP Joba Chamberlain underwent an MRI on his right shoulder Tuesday as scheduled in New York and was then headed to see Dr. James Andrews for a consultation in Alabama. The Yankees did not reveal the results of the MRI on Tuesday, though it's expected Chamberlain will miss at least one start. The phenom left Monday's game in the fifth inning after complaining of tightness in the shoulder. The Yankees will surely be cautious with the pitcher they regard as their budding ace.

--RHP Darrell Rasner lost his rotation spot to RHP Dan Giese just a couple of days ago, but might be pressed back into duty due to the absence of RHP Joba Chamberlain. While Rasner has struggled lately, manager Joe Girardi did mention him as a possibility to fill in while Chamberlain is out with an injured shoulder. Another possibility is RHP Ian Kennedy, who struggled early this season, then was hurt, but has pitched well for Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

--LHP Andy Pettitte had his second straight rough start, yielding five runs on six hits in five innings. Pettitte fell to 12-9 on the season, and the Yankees can't allow much margin for error from him the rest of the way. With RHP Joba Chamberlain out for now and the rest of the rotation other than RHP Mike Mussina a patchwork job, the Yankees need Pettitte to step up.

--CF Justin Christian got his second straight start while OF Melky Cabrera again sat before pinch-hitting late in the game. Christian went 1-for-2 with his sixth stolen base, but manager Joe Girardi turned to Cabrera in the seventh. Cabrera, who had three hits in his last 23 at-bats, popped out.

--1B Richie Sexson had one of his best games as a Yankee on Tuesday night, going 2-for-4 with a grand slam. Sexson's eighth-inning inning homer closed the deficit to 8-6. The Yankees would get no closer though, and they lost when Alex Rodriguez grounded into a game-ending double play.

BY THE NUMBERS
72 -- Yankees' old-timers who showed up for the final Old-Timers Day at Yankee Stadium on Aug. 3.

QUOTE TO NOTE
"(It's) something I'll never forget. I got goose bumps. I got a little emotional for a second... I've been away for a while, but my heart and soul has always been here. I've got Yankee blood left in me and I always will." -- Former Yankees second baseman Willie Randolph, who received a long, warm ovation on Old-Timers Day a little more than a month after getting fired as the Mets' manager.
